'Welcome to our university! You should find it quite comfortable and that everyone here is involved in the community. Congratulation on the scholarship Miss Pierpoint'

The older man standing in front of me spoke whilst powerfully shaking my hand.

He apparently held high power within the university. The looks of passer-by's confirmed it through their nods of acknowledgement and fearful gazes. You could tell they either know him or what to be known by him. His long, slow strides radiated confidence and superiority, the black Armani suit only encouraging this.

'Your family and acquaintances assured me that your work ethic is of the highest standard. I read some of your work and can personally vouch for its high quality.'

He spoke eloquently whilst continuing his outstretched strides.

I stopped in my tracks at the mention of my family.

'My family has an input in my application? I was assured they would be disregarded and only my writing would be under criticism'

My words sounded calm but anger was boiling inside me. I can't believe them, I can never achieve anything without their participation.

'Your father contacted the university to personally vouch for you. He also sent a list of contacts who could be contacted for further references. He assured me you knew and told me how excited you were to be considered.'

'Oh no don't get me wrong but I'm shocked to find out of my fathers....For lack of a better word, interference'

'I genuinely hope you don't change your mind on this opportunity'

I just smiled at him and nodded. Continuing to walk through the grounds as he pointed out random architectural factors of the campus. The conversation soon turned to his family and private life.

'Do you plan on living in the dorms or have you got your own place or relatives?'

'Oh I have a small loft just near the campus. I wanted to get into the dorms but there weren't any available in building on the east of campus' I frowned

'My daughter is in your class, she happens to be in the east dorms but desperately wanted to get an apartment. I just wouldn't allow her to move out by herself. New York is a big place and I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing she was all alone. She knows full well that she can stay at my wife's and I's townhouse.'

'My loft is an apartment that's been split in half. I was weary at first because there is a communal kitchen. If your daughter is still looking for a loft I can put in a good word? It's only a few doors down from the east dorms and is above the French restaurant.'

'She would love that thank you. Eliza should be in the private music rooms if you want to call past there and introduce yourself?'

'I'll make sure to go visit her. It would be good to meet someone else.'

He smiled politely before dismissing himself.

I let out a breath I hadn't realised I'd been holding.
