Cressida Phillips, a research student, is used to admiring Dr Thorndon-Davis from a safe distance in the lecture hall. She is well practised at hiding her feelings: her desire for the charismatic lecturer, and also her anger at her patronising tutor, Christian. When Cressida and Davis begin work on a project together, Cressida is breath-taken to realize that she has not gone unnoticed by Davis. Their growing love is shaken when she finds out that Davis has had a relationship with a student before. However, emboldened by Davis's love and support, Cressida confronts Christian and defies his disapproval.
