“Negative.” I sighed in relief. I ran up to Monroe, and jumped into his arms. He held me there for a minute, and then asked, “So, what did they say?”

“Negative!!” I screamed so loud the neighbors could hear. But the neighbors were my friends, and they were awaiting the answer as well.

Monroe kissed me once, and then began to speak.

“I promise to you, I will never make that stupid mistake again… I don’t know what I’d tell myself if they came positive.”

“Well this isn’t going to happen again, because we aren’t doing anything like that again.”

“Umm…?”

“Well not until marriage.”

“Oh… Why not?”

“Monroe! It is the responsible thing to do! I don’t want to have to go through this again, unless I have a stable house or apartment, and I’m not single!” I jumped out of his arms and walked over to the other side of the living room.

“Babe, don’t take me saying that the wrong way. I love you… I really do… The only thing I want from you is for you to love me back. I couldn’t care if we never had sex again. I love you. I always have, and always will. You mean the world to me.” He looked into my eyes, and there wasn’t I lie through the whole thing. Which I found odd around the “I couldn’t care if we never had sex again…” but he was telling the truth. I smiled and gave him a big hug. He kissed the top of my head and said “What do you want to do tonight?”

“How about the classic ‘Dinner and a Movie’?”

“Sounds great to me. Want to see ‘A Love like This: A Romance’ or ‘Massacre of the Living Dead’?” He already knew my answer, but just to confirm:

“Massacre of the Living Dead!” I smiled and he kissed me once more. “Lemme get ready, ‘kay?”

“Whatever you want. I’m going to look up movie times. Where do you want to go to dinner?”

“Uuuh… either BK or Papa Gino’s. What do you want?”

“BK sounds great. I could go for a burger.”

“Okay.” I smiled and walked into my bedroom. The room was a mess; both my clothes and Monroe’s clothes were scattered everywhere. He was living with Amity and I. I couldn’t bear for him to live anywhere else. Amity finally let him be with me, even after she thought I was pregnant with his child.

I grabbed my pair of “fancy jeans” and a T-shirt. We never made our dates a big deal, and we weren’t going to start now. I walked into the bathroom and turned the shower on. I had stress knots in my back from whether or not I was going to have a baby, and what I was going to do if I was. The hot shower should help, so I wasted no time, and I soon as I was undressed, I jumped into the shower.

*********

“Are you sure you aren’t too scared?” He whispered to me, so no one could hear.

“Yah. I’m sure.” I spoke into his shirt, and I was gripping him so tightly I surprised he didn’t lose circulation in his arm. He put his other arm around me, and didn’t let me go until the credits rolled.

“To Burger King?” I nodded my head yes once, and then we got up and left the theater. We walked down the street together, hand in hand. He was wearing a grey turtle neck sweater and blue jeans. He had it un-zipped to the point of his breast line.

We turned onto Mill Street, and BK was on our right. Most couples would look at us in shame, but burger king wasn’t classy and expensive, and money isn’t needed to show love. Words are.

I ordered a whopper junior meal, and he got a quarter-pounder. We shared a large Root beer and a medium fry.

“Are you enjoying yourself?” He asked before he took his first bite of his burger.

“Yah, I am. Thanks babe.” I leaned over the table and kissed him once after he swallowed the food in his mouth.

“Good. I hoped so. Romance was never my forte…” I giggled.

“Well, you seemed romantic at the cliché a few months back. And just by curiosity… Did you say that Will Smith quote for any particular reason?”

“Well, I know that Switch is your favorite song…”

“Yah, but that is when we first met. How did you know my favorite song?”

“Well… I just…”

“You stalked me, didn’t you?!?”

“Well, Shell hun, you gotta understand-” I cut him off before he could finish.

“How many other girls did you stalk?” I wasn’t raising my voice, but I really wanted to.

“None, babe, you gotta understand. I had only ever seen you from afar, and I just needed to know if there was anyone else, that’s all babe. I’m not crazy; I swear to you, I’m not.”

I sighed then went back to eating my burger.

“I love you” he whispered to me. I kept on looking down.

Twenty wordless minutes passed.

“So can I trust you?” I whispered, but looked into his eyes.

“Of course.”

We finished up dinner, and we walked back towards the apartment. Our hands were intertwined and we walked close.

“I love you.” He spoke tenderly, and then kissed me before we walked into the building.
