The Boy Behind Me – Chapter 1

My alarm screeched in my ear as I hurried to turn it off, squinting my eyes in the process. Why was I up again? Oh yeah. THE FIRST DAY OF MY SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL WAS TODAY OH JOY.

Sarcasm intended. Kind of. It's not like I'm bad at school or anything. I have a pretty good life; my parents aren't split up, I'm an only child, and I'm pretty popular.

But even so my life is a lot of work. Most people don't understand how hard it is to keep up this sort of reputation. You really have to work for it. I currently am valedictorian in my class, play tennis, golf, and basketball, and have a regular social life. Crap like that is hard!

Oh well. Time to stop complaining. I rolled out of bed, eager to jump in the shower and look hella cute for the first day. As I grabbed my clothes, I imagined how the school day would go. I thought about them doing away with the stupid alphabetical seats we'd had since Kindergarten, but even though I hoped I knew it was foolish. They were never getting rid of that system. They were forever splitting up friendships with different last names.

Most of my friends were lucky; their last names all started with A through C. I got stuck with a W as the first letter of my last name.

Westbrook? Seriously? Why couldn't it have been like, Adams or something? This whole system was stupid, and because of it, I'd been stuck sitting in front of this kid named Luke Wyatt, who'd never said more than a word to me except to borrow a pencil. Literally, the guy seemed to never own a pencil and everytime I would lend him one, it was fall into the endless abyss that was his backpack.

I got out of the shower and wrapped a towel around me. I drummed my fingers on the counter as I decided what to do with my hair. Hmm. Straightened? No, I did that too often already. Aha! I reached under and grabbed my curling wand and ran back to my room while that was heating up.

Smart lil' ol' me picked out my outfit the night before so I wouldn't have had to do it in a limited amount of time, which was smart considering it took me two hours to finally decide on what I liked. There was a guy I had been trying to impress since freshman year; I'd had the biggest crush on him then and it'd only gotten worse over the years. Ugh. Ethan Brady had stolen my heart and carried around it with him unknowingly since the first day of high school. I had always been attracted to popular guys but never like I had with Ethan. He was more spontaneous than anyone had ever met in my entire life and his eyes were my world. So yeah, this outfit was pretty much for him. I went with a lacey-type shirt that had butterfly patterns on it and a black skirt that went up a little higher than it should've.

I finished up curling my hair in twenty minutes and was done getting ready early so I decided to stop by Starbucks before actually going to school, since it was a tradition to get coffee on the first day. I went in to get my coffee and my heart jumped when I almost ran into Ethan on the way in.

"Woah! Sorry Delilah, I didn't see you there," He chuckled.

"No I'm sorry! That was totally my fault, I should've been watching where I was going! And, you can call me Lilah," I couldn't help but blush a little when I said that. Only my friends called me Lilah.

"Alrighty. See you at school?" He said as he flashed a smile that warmed my heart.

"Y-yeah." Ugh. I was so pathetic. 'Yeah?' Really? I mentally slapped myself as I walked in to buy my coffee. Once I had my Double Chocolate Chip Mocha I was on my way to school.

This was gonna be interesting.

As soon I got to school I was swarmed by my friends. There was Ashley, Jessica, Vivian, Isabella, Hunter, Matthew, and Steven. Ashley was the "quiet" one out of us, if there was one. She was really artistic, smart, and loved music. She played three instruments, and was currently teaching me guitar. Jessica, or Jess, never stopped talking. She was loud, clumsy, and tone deaf, but could make you laugh when you're on the verge of tears or just listen if you needed it. She was the complete opposite of Ashley but they were the best of friends. Separating them was impossible. Vivian, or Viv, was a short redhead with a lot of energy. She was the brains of the group. Anytime we worked on a project together, she was the leader of the group. She wanted to get into a really good college to be a doctor. She could do it. Isabella was like me. She loved art, but wasn't really good at it, single but gave the best relationship advice, and could sing really well but was too scared to let anybody hear her.

And then there was the boys. Sure, they were funny, and smart, but all they ever talked about was Nicole Hartman. Nicole Hartman was the queen butthole at our school. She was pretty, but her personality made her disgusting. Even so, I tried to be nice.

"HEY LILAH!" They all screamed.

I laughed and rolled my eyes. "Hey guys. You know I'm literally right in front of you, right?"

"Yeah but screaming is fun!" Said Steven.

I just looked at him. "O-kay. Well, sane people, let us receive our schedules!" I got out of my car and we walked to the office.

Luckily, the girls were in nearly all of my classes. The only two I had different were Creative Writing and Photography. Nobody knew it, but I loved photography and writing. I smiled.

This year was gonna be sick.

Hey guys! Your author here! I hope you like the story, and I'm so so so sorry this was so late. I lost the first five chapters of this story on my old laptop so I'm having to rewrite it, but I'm kinda glad, because I already like the first chapter better than I did all five of the other chapters, so yeah. Feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks
