Drake clutched his backpack desperately as he raced through the knee high snow towards school. This is one thing he hated about living in the mountains in Florida, the snow.
Today was Drake's first day of his sophomore year at Elmont High School, and tardiness wasn't exactly a thing that they approved. As Drake reached the school gates, he spotted the familiar face of Eric Gonzales, along with his two friends Cory and Dale. They were all football players on the Elmont football team.
Drake tried to go around them, but Eric grabbed him by the back of his shirt collar. "And just where, " Eric snarled, "do you think you're going, chump?"
Drake stayed quiet. He figured out a long time ago that if he kept his mouth shut long enough, he had a better chance of getting to class without toilet water all over his face and shirt. However, the longer Drake stayed quiet, the bigger Eric's scowl got.
Drake braced himself as Eric pulled back his fist. Just then, the school bell rang, and Eric dropped Drake in the snow. "You got lucky this time squirt," Eric said, pointing at Drake with an enormous finger, then turning and walking away. Drake sighed and stood up racing into the building.
As Drake stood at his locker, he heard giggling behind him. He looked behind him to find Cheyenne, the most popular girl in school, standing with her friends. They were pointing at him and giggling. Looking down, Drake saw that the butt of his pants were soaked from when Eric had dropped him in the snow. Biting his lip, Drake ran into the bathroom.
Drake bent over the sink as he cried. This day was not going his way. He sucked in a breath as someone exited the stall behind him. A boy with black, slicked back hair came up next to him and began washing his hands. The boy looked up at Drake, and instantly became concerned when he saw Drake's tear - stained face. "Hey," the boy asked, "are you okay?" Drake sniffed and nodded. The boy shrugged. "If you say so." Drying off his hands, the boy extended his hand to Drake. "I'm Oscar," the boy said. Drake shook Oscar's hand.
"Drake," Drake said. Oscar nodded.
"Must have been a rough morning," Oscar said. Drake sighed.
"You have no idea," Drake said, raking a hand through his shaggy brown hair. Oscar smiled.
"Eric?," Oscar asked. Shocked that Oscar guessed so easily, Drake nodded. "Yeah he gives everybody trouble." He scratches his chin thoughtfully. "You should come hang with my friend and I at lunch," Oscar said. "She hates Eric more than you." Drake cocked his head.
"She?," Drake asked curiously. Oscar nodded.
"Yeah, my friend's a girl." Drake agreed to meet Oscar at lunch, then raced to class, which was already halfway over.
Walking into the classroom, Drake made up an excuse to tell his teacher. "So let me get this straight, " the teacher said. "The stall got jammed?" Drake nodded, cringing inside at the laughs he heard behind him.
"Teacher," someone said. "I don't think the stall jammed, I think Drake's just an idiot." Drake felt a tear slide down his cheek. Turning, he saw the boy who'd spoken.
He had blonde spiked up hair and green eyes. He smirked at Drake. "Awww, is Draky-poo going to cry?," the boy asked mockingly. Drake felt his fist clench.
"That's quite enough Carmen," the teacher said. Carmen huffed and leaned back in his chair. "Look Drake," the teacher said, "just. . .go sit down okay? I'll let this slide." Drake nodded and sat down in the back of the class.
