X – Wounds and Omens
The Special Duty 6 base on Mid-Childa had returned to the constant activity that had always defined it, yet something about the atmosphere still felt out of place. It was a kind of precarious balance, as though everything continued to function because it had to, not because things were truly in order.
Nanoha strode through the corridors with firm steps, offering brief greetings to those she passed, though her attention was not really on them. Her destination was the laboratory, where a group of engineers from Caledfwlch Technics had requested her presence that morning. They had something new, something that, according to the preliminary report, might improve their chances of success in the mission. At this point, Nanoha was willing to bet on any measure that might give them an advantage.
Five days. She had had enough time to process what had happened... or at least to try.
The wounded were stable. That was what mattered. Vita, Erio, the rest of the team... even Hayate, who, despite the severity of her injuries, refused to remain on the sidelines. Nanoha could picture her perfectly, surrounded by reports in her hospital bed, ignoring the pain with the same determination she brought to everything she faced.
The team was still standing. Touma and the others had been rescued. And yet...
Nanoha turned a corner and descended one of the internal ramps leading to the technical areas. The sounds of constant work grew louder as she approached the laboratory: tools, devices powering up, technical conversations conducted in hushed voices. Everything continued moving forward.
But there was no sense of victory. The AEC equipment had worked. That was undeniable. But it had not been enough.
Her gaze drifted briefly toward one of the windows along the corridor, through which she could see part of the hangar and several Devices lying open on maintenance tables. The damaged units were still not fully operational, and although the engineers worked without rest, every repair seemed more like a patch than a permanent solution. They had been prepared... but not prepared enough. Nanoha kept walking.
The wounds she had sustained were now little more than a mild inconvenience. Nothing that justified taking her off active duty. She had returned almost immediately, partly because she could... and partly because remaining still only forced her to think more than she wanted to.
To think about the battle. About Touma. About what had happened... about that moment. Her stride did not falter, but her expression tightened slightly.
The Abyss Breaker.
The pressure in the air. The feeling of absolute danger. The certainty that, if anything went wrong... there would be no way to stop it. Nanoha's brow furrowed faintly. It was not merely the power. It was the intent behind it.
Frank Castle remained in custody. His injuries had been treated, his possessions confiscated, and he was kept under round-the-clock surveillance, with a powerful anti-magic field surrounding his cell.
His presence at the base was being handled with an unusual degree of discretion, even by TSAB standards. Only strictly necessary personnel had access to the full details, and even then, everything remained contained and controlled. Hayate had made that decision personally, limiting any information leaks that might complicate the situation more than necessary.
It was the right decision... probably. Even so, Nanoha could not help thinking that it was not merely a strategic concern. Punisher was not a simple case. Not after everything he had done. Nanoha had thought Hayate would want to send him to headquarters and be rid of him, but he remained with them. Clearly, her friend had plans she had not yet shared.
