Chapter 10

I don't even acknowledge the people surround the corridors as I made my way to where McKenzie is suspected. I hear their whispering and feel their judging eyes burning holes in my back. But at this rate, I couldn't care less.

"Awww. What do we have here ? Is someone crying ?" Lucy steps in front of me, stopping me in my tracks. Along with Joanne. Lucy is stood with her hands on her hips, faking a pout.

"Oh fuck off Lucy!" I growl at her, not in the mood to be listening to her whiney bullshit.

"You can't talk to me like that! Who do you think you are?!" Lucy screeches at me, face screwed up. Now she didn't look so flawless as she so tried to be. The flinches and cringes didn't go unnoticed as students walk by.

"Jesus Christ, hasn't anyone had enough of her whiney nonsense? I certainly have, that's for sure!" I shout, earning cheers and agreement and roars at laughter, directed at Lucy's ridiculousness. She looked ready to burst, and the face she made, made everyone laugh twice as hard.
I didn't stay around to listen to her waffle on. I continued my search for McKenzie, and I didn't have to go far to find her. I find her behind the shed, in a daze while she puffs on a death-stick. "McKenzie!" I pant, my exhaustion setting in after my mission is complete.

She looks at me, surprised and worried. "What's wrong?!"

I sniffle, "I-I just need some comfort... I thought I saw my father." I lie. There was no way I was telling her exactly what just happened. The best option was to lie at this point. She's freak if she knew.

She smiles at me sympathetically, stubbing out her cigarette and coming over to me, wrapping her arms around me. "Sweetie, it was just a hallucination."

"But he seemed to real! He was right there!" I play along.

"Honey he couldn't have been. He's dead."

"Well I think I know that McKenzie!! I was there, remember?!" I remind her.

"I remember, Gabrielle! But consider the chances of him coming back from the dead?"

"I know... I know." I agree, shivering as I thought back to when he died.

I was only 13, so i was still young enough not to care or know what was going on in his life. We'd agreed on cinema and ice cream one day, just out of the blue. After the film we went for a walk, just the two of us.

"You know I love you, don't you Gabrielle?" Dad had stated randomly.

"Of course Daddy, what makes you say that?" I had replied, engulfing more chocolate delight into my mouth.
"No reason sweetheart. But just remember I love you. I'll always be here," he taps on my heart, "whenever you need me, honey. I just want you to be reassured, is all. Shall we head home love? It's starting to get chilly." Dad had changed the subject, not wanting for me to reply before continuing to walk in the direction of home.

I'd loved that day, it had been awhile since we'd actually spent time together. At that time Dad had started to bring strange looking men who stared at me weirdly. Me, being the innocent 13 I was, thought nothing of it then.
Later on that night, Dad tucked me in bed, which was something he hadn't done since mum left.

He sat with me for a while, just talking about how much fun we had and how much he loved me. When it was finally time for me to go to bed, he hugged me tight to the point my ribs hurt. I caught the sight of ready eyes as he left my room, closing the door on his way out before I had time to mention it, leaving me in the darkness.

I knew from that alone that something wasn't right, and my young imagination wasn't helping either.
I had tossed and tuned for what felt like hours. I ended up giving up and though it would be fine to go see daddy downstairs.

What a bad idea that was !

Quietly, I had tiptoed my way downstairs, unaware that dad had... visitors.

The living room door was pushed to, but still ajar, leaving just a tiny gap that allowed me to see into the room.

Four strange men with back cloaks stood around my dad, chanting words I couldn't even begin to pronounce.
Luckily, the room was dark enough for nobody to catch the sight of me.

Not yet confident to step in, I stayed still at the doorway, peaking in on them. Minutes passed, and so did daddy's balance.
He had now collapsed to the flood, clearly unable to stand anymore, and now sat sobbing quietly on the ground.

His breathing deepens and his skin paled.
My little eyebrows furrowed in confusion. What's happening? I had thought, and unknowingly stepped into the room. None of the strange men had noticed me yet, but daddy had.

"Gabrielle leave !" He had shouted, somewhat more scarier. "I'm ordering you to leave! It's not safe for you here!" Daddy had ordered, practically growling.
I began to feel different, a weird sensation tingled in my head. It has hurt so bad that I remember clutching my head in pain. While I did this, daddy had fallen asleep in a strange position, or so I thought.

I remember screaming at the strange men to leave, and never come back. But that was responded with a backhand to the face.
Furious and afraid, I had ran upstairs to my room once more and eventually fallen asleep, completely forgetting the state of daddy downstairs.

"Gabrielle! Are you okay?" McKenzie brought me back from that horrid memory. "Look, I'm sorry that your dad was in a car crash. But you've got to realise it wasn't him, okay?"

Oh yeah, I didn't tell McKenzie the truth. There was no way in hell I was telling her a story like that! She'll think I'm crazy!

"Yeah I'm okay, I'm a little shook up, but I'm okay. I think I just really wanted it to be him, y'know?" I shrug my shoulders, "I miss him a lot."

"Yeah I understand. But it's okay. I know it hurts, "McKenzie agrees.

"But anyway, moving onto a more interesting subject. Flair." With the mention of her name escaping my mouth, McKenzie's head swings in my direction so face you'd think she'd have whiplash.

"What about her?" She answers vaguely.

"Oh come on! I see the way you longingly stare after her. Just tell me." I nudge her playfully, my mood greatly improved.

"It's nothing, seriously." McKenzie downplays, shrugging it off.

"I know you better!" I reply, in a sing-song voice.
I watch as McKenzie battles with herself.
"Okay find! I have a thing for her!" She admits.

I squeal at the news. "So come on. How long have you been keeping this from me?!"

"... since we kissed at Jeffersons party 3 weeks ago..." she timidly answers,  sheepish smile on her face.

"WHAT!? No way! Why didn't you tell me sooner McKenzie?"

"Because I didn't feel as if it was worth saying anything." McKenzie says truthfully, "but I do really like her, Gabs."

"Goals!"

"Oh shush you," she smirks at me playfully. "What have you just come from, anyway? Spiritual?"

I tense. "Oh, y-yeah." I stutter.

"Well? What's he like?"

"He's okay," I shrug off, "not as good looking as people are saying." I lie

"Really?!"

"I suppose..." I sigh, not really wanting to talk about that horrid bastard of a creature any longer.
Before McKenzie can put in another word, we're greeted with the sound of the bell.

Lovely.
