Chapter 1
Aiden POV
The bimonthly meeting was starting shortly. I was racing on all fours to make it there on time. As the soon-to-be Alpha my swift speed was unmatched by anyone in the pack. The uniquely golden fur of my wolf was merely a blur, until I became nothing but a gust of wind. My paws grazed the lush forest ground and within the blink of an eye transformed into feet. I made it. Mackenzie, however, would probably be late. She wasn’t nearly as fast as me. Besides, sex is known to weaken female wolves. I wasn’t concerned for her though. Sure she was useful for a release, but she wasn’t my mate.
My mate. That’s surely what this pack gathering would revolve around. I would be given my position as Alpha in 6 weeks, but I was mate-less. Although we can become Alpha while unmated, ruling for too long without a mate was disastrous to both the pack and ourselves. The Alpha has always had a mate before stepping into his position. My pack was restless, as were my parents. My wolf was getting anxious as well. My mate should be at my side by now. I was already 21 years old. I don’t know my mate, but I know who she is.
When werewolves first came into existence, a seer among them foretold of a great prophecy to be fulfilled when The Golden Wolf came to rule. The most powerful witch in existence would hold the other part of his soul. The golden wolf and the fearless witch would, together, lead the supernatural world to peace. Side by side the most powerful descendent of the Conwell witches and the strongest Alpha of all wolves would thrive.
I was the Golden Wolf, and my time to rule begins in 6 weeks.
The question is—“Where is your mate?!”
“If I knew that, father, she would be beside me…” My father was a little more than restless at this point. It was all he could focus on.
A few of the wolves in our pack were familiar with witchcraft. Those with any skills were asked to create potions and spells to locate her. My father has given all of them my blood in hopes of locating her through our connection.
It won’t work--destiny cannot be tricked my magic. I will find her when destiny wants me too. And in the meantime, I’ll enjoy being unmated. Speaking of being unmated, I wonder if Mackenzie made it back…
“Be patient, Sweetie. You’ll find her. And if it isn’t until a year after you’ve taken the Alpha position, then so be it. Isn’t that right, Alex?” My mother gave my father a pointed look, to which he crumbled under. Ah, the power of mates.
“Yes. Just keep your eyes open, Aiden. The sooner you find her, the more relaxed we’ll all feel.” He ended with a small smile and gestured for me sit beside him at the table.
Not everyone from the pack was here, only those who held positions or were involved in the politics of our pack for whatever reason. Mackenzie’s father was still recovering from a fight and she was sitting in for him today. I looked up after hearing the doors slam open.
“I’m so sorry I’m late, Alpha! I lost track of time.” Mackenzie looked worn from her run here. She stared at me as she sat down, but I couldn’t be bothered to return it.
“We just finished up discussing Aiden’s mate situation; we are moving on to the current disagreement with the vampires…” I zoned out as everyone relayed their information about the vampires. I already knew everything and my father would say everything over again at dinner.
I was right. My father went on and on about Drake’s son, Damien. Drake was the ruler of all vampires. His son Damien, like me, was soon to take his place as the new leader. However, vampires didn’t need mates to rule. They ruled alone or with someone they chose -- usually based on strength and power. This might be why they could never defeat us, despite their strength in numbers. Perhaps, the need to survive and provide for our mates—essentially our world—was too strong for us to be defeated. This is why it is of the utmost importance for the Alpha to have his mate beside him. She gives him something to fight for, to live for, and to shine as bright as he can for.
