Chapter 2
“Hey, I’m Dave Turner,” Dave said as he held his hand out to me.
I slapped it away, “Hey, I don’t care. Now leave me alone, and go hang out with the rest of your gym monkeys.”
He sat down next to me on the stairs in the auditorium. I always ate here for peace and quiet, although sometimes Kyle would join me. Dave being here was a disappointment, and it was just an interruption from me learning more about the computer business. He said, “You’re always so… alone. I just wanted to include you. Come to the cafeteria and sit with me and my friends.” He flashed me a bright smile and said, “Do me the honor?” He extended his hand.
I closed my eyes and said, “Fine, if you leave me alone.” I grabbed his hand and hoisted myself up.
He pulled me closer to him and said, “I don’t know if I can leave you alone, that’d be like asking you to stop being beautiful.”
I blush a beet red color, but followed him into the cafeteria. He introduced me to his friends and seated me next to a girl. She introduced herself as Chloe, and I realized that I had four classes with her.
* * *
That was the day I met Dave and Chloe, and I thought that we’d be best friends forever. But now I knew that wasn’t true. Dave and I had had a messy break up, in which our friends had to basically choose one of us. Now, seeing Dave Turner standing in the front of the classroom, all the feelings of sadness, anger, and even love that were associated with our breakup wash over me. I flick a glance at Chloe, and she immediately offers me her seat. I nod and we quickly swap seats.
Dave (of course) takes the seat next to Chloe, and after the teacher releases us, he walks towards my desk. Kyle stands in front of me and so does Chloe. I hear Dave say, “Can I talk to her? Please. We haven’t talked since we broke up last year.”
Kyle snarled, “You mean when you started acting like a douche? I wouldn’t want to talk to your jerk ass anyway. Leave. Now.”
Chloe says, “Yeah, leave. Do you know how much pain you put her through? I half of the cheerleaders on speed dial. I swear if you don’t leave, you’re not getting a date until you’re forty two. Now shoo you little pest.”
I say, “Wait, don’t leave Dave. You can talk to me.”
Kyle and Chloe turn around and both of their faces read, “ARE YOU INSANE?!” Kyle jabs a finger into Dave’s shoulder and says, “You get five minutes, Turner. And as soon as the lady or I say time’s up, time’s up. Got it?”
Dave nods and Chloe and Kyle leave, both staring at us in the distance. “What’s up Dave?”
Dave smiles and says, “Not much. I just missed hearing your voice. And I wanted to apologize for being a jerk. I let being the captain of the basketball team get to me… Sorry…”
I can’t help but smile. Dave is such a nice guy, and his smile always makes me smile. He has short dirty blonde hair and attractive grey eyes that are filled with mystery, a mystery in which I always get caught up. I snap myself out of the trance and reply, “I’m sorry the breakup was so messy… I could have at least acted like I cared. Which I did, I just didn’t show it. So its not your fault.”
Dave smiles and says, “Nah, I was a jerk. I could’ve at least pretended to be nice. Which I am, I just didn’t show it.” I laugh and he continues, “Anyway, do you want to grab a coffee or something at lunch? And catch up?”
“I don’t know…” I say hesitantly. Dave’s face drops and then I make up an excuse, “I already have lunch plans with a friend. A guy friend.”
