I scurry up to a tree and flatten myself to the trunk hiding from the bright blue searchlight that scans the ground not 20 meters away from me. The bright light beamed down through the trees, making everything almost shine. I hug the tree for dear life. I didn't know they would turn on the lights so early. I know this has been going on for the past two years, but the idea of being caught makes me quiver. The light suddenly flies north, away from me. Millions of images of being dissected, eaten, tested on, and even probed play out in my head. I grit my teeth and take off through the trees to my original destination.
As I come closer, I can see a dying fire under a green tarp flapping in the slight breeze that made
what was left of the yellow and orange leaves on the surrounding trees dance. I feel kind of sorry for this group. An unknown person was about to merrily skip into their camp and steal them blind of their medicine. They are so helpless! I grin to myself and tip toe closer. The sleeping bodies of around 15 to 20 people lie around the fire pit huddled for warmth. I scan the camp and land on A pile of plastic cases and back packs in clear view. This is too easy! I step forward and trip and catch myself, making an orchestra of sound. I squeeze my eyes shut, sure I had just woken up every living thing withing a mile radius. The sound echos in my ears for a few moments and I open my eyes slowly. Everyone was still sound asleep. Holy cow!
I go over to the pile and begin to rummage. "Hi there, mind telling me why your digging threw our supplies?" A fierce whisper startles me. I fly up into a defencive stance that my father had taught me. "Yeah, I need medicine." I growl. In the darkness the figure looked tall and curvy with long flowy hair. Definitely a woman. Easy to apprehend. "Well that's just to bad isn't it? We happen to need it also. So if you would kindly turn and leave, I would gladly let you go unharmed." She states calmly. I snort in reply, "And that's supposed to be intimidating?" She stands straighter than before. "Yes. Your trying to steal from a group of mostly elderly people for your own personal gain. That's a moral offence, and I'm willing to let it slide." The sky flashes blue not that far off. I giggle mockingly at her front of bravery.
" So I'm supposed to care about a bunch of old people, who I don't know, let alone care about, over a young and capable sick me?" This was getting to long an unnecessary. "You are the lowest kind of person." She bares her teeth holding out a knife. "Says you." I say dodging her stab into the air and going for a random bag. Hope its pregnancy meds in this heavy thing. I take off running only to be pulled backward my my shirt. "You bitch!" I growl twisting to punch her in the nose. She grabs my arm and holds the knife to my throat. "Hand over the bag and leave." She says lowly. I drop it. "Good. Now get out of here!" She drops me. "Wait!" I whisper in desperation. She turns to me in a attack stance, ready to pounce. "I...I don't need the medicine for me...Its for a pregnant woman in my group." I confess quickly. She stands up strait again. "I doubt that, but why would she need it?"
She crosses her arms, making sure the knife was still visible. "She....shes had three miscarriages already. And now that the baby has made it to the delivery point...shes afraid it wont make it either." I slump my shoulders in defeat. Maybe she will give me some if I'm truthful. "Oh, I see. Wouldn't that just mean she needs someone to deliver it that knows what their doing?" She seems surprised. "Well...I guess. I know nothing about pregnancies though..." She drops her cool act all together. "So, if you were to have someone help her, you would leave the medicine here and go back to your camp?" I look down at my bare feet, wishing I wasn't such a weakling as to ask help from an outsider. "I guess." She leans over and picks up the bag and throwing it over her shoulder. "Then I will help you."
I look up in astonishment. "Really?" "Yes really. Where is your camp located?" She asks digging into her pocket and pulling out a small device and pressing a button. A flat hologram of a forest beams out with a blinking red dot in the center of the image. "Whoa! What is that?" I look curiously. "Alien technology. I'm not an expert on it, but I think its a map." She said pressing a red button, causing the hologram to zoom out, having a wider view. "I assume you are not very far away." She says studying the blinking dot. "And why would you assume that?" I ask doubting her. "Well, for starters, no leader in their right mind would send a girl out on a scavenger mission alone." She points at me smiling.
" I wasn't sent, I'm sneaking." I scowl." I wanted to help the poor lady out. Shes always so sad." She smiles wider. "That's sweet. But stupid. Do you realize how dangerous it is?" She scolds me. "I'm not dumb, I know that!" I get hot in the face. She laughs quietly. "Which direction did you come from?" "East I think." I say looking around debating the directions in my head. " So I'm guessing around...here?" She says scrolling the image around to a small purple circle. "How...?" I'm dumb founded at her precise location. What other amazing tech did those monsters have?! " Its a motion map. It can detect the smallest of movements from a wave of a hand to a run." I nod, taking this in. The far off blue blinking seems to be getting closer. The lady looks up worriedly.
"Okay. I will be there tomorrow morning to talk with your leader about the situation. You need to go." She says hurriedly turning off the gadget and shoving in back into her pants. "...Okay...Don't tell them about this!" I say. She looks at me like a mother would her child even if she was maybe only a year or two older than me. "Promise. Now go! They are coming." Without a goodbye, she turns and sprints back to her camp. I look around happily. I failed at getting what I originally wanted, but at least I will be helpful! I smile to myself as I take off back into the trees.
