I was panting terribly, and Mom and Dad were yelling loudly downstairs. I heard their shouts and gulped as I heard a loud smack! and the frightening slam of the door so hard the house shook. I heard Mom crying and sobbing. I crept down the stairs slowly and peered out through the banisters' poles. Mom was on the couch, her eyes covered by her wet hands, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Mommy?" Rosalie pounded down the steps, ignoring my whispered command to stay still. "Mommy, are you okay?" She plopped down next to Mom and hugged her tightly. I stepped out in the open, knowing it was okay to be noticed.
Mom looked up and stared at me, eyes red. "I thought you girls went to sleep," Mom said, tearing her trance away from me. I went down the stairs and plopped down next to Rosalie. "We'll be okay, girls. I promise you, we'll be okay."
We understood what she meant. We heard the entire fight. We couldn't get it out of our minds. We were alone.I woke up with a start, a gasp escaping my mouth. I was drenched in sweat, and I panted. I turned to my right to find Rosalie watching me beside my bed, eyes wide in worry. "What...what are you doing here?" I whispered.
"I heard you crying from my room and thought you were awake...did you have the dream again?" Rosalie explained. I sighed and leaned against my pillow, pulling her gently onto the bed.
"Yeah. Yeah, I did have the dream. I can't get it out of my mind, Rosalie. How do you not have those dreams anymore?" I shook my head, pulling my sticky brown hair into a ponytail.
"I-I try to think of something else before I fall asleep, like...rainbows. And-and happiness." Rosalie stared at me with her big brown eyes and I hugged her tightly, welling up with tears.
"I found something in the attic when you were asleep." Rosalie said quietly as we pulled away. "You'd better come with me. I don't think it belongs to Mom."
"What?" I gasped as she pulled me out of bed and into the attic, where she brought me over to the far corner. She reached into a small hole in the floor and pulled out a small box, which had the initials: "B.E.J" written on the top neatly.
"Mom's initials definitely aren't B.E.J. What's inside?" I whispered, examining the box. "Seems pretty old, come to think of it."
"I don't know what's inside. I was too scared to open it." Rosalie whispered, and I heard her gulp. "Maybe you should open it? I don't know what's going to be inside."
"I don't think I should risk it..." I muttered, but then thought, What if it's something like a diamond? We could sell it and then we'd be rich. We wouldn't worry about anything. I took a deep breath and sighed.
"What?" Rosalie scooted closer to me. "What are you thinking?"
"I should open this." I stared at the box. "It could be something that we could sell."
"But what if it isn't?" Rosalie widened her eyes and I licked my dry lips, putting my hand on the clasp.
"I'll risk it." I said, and opened the clasp, sucking in a deep breath.
What was inside really made me happy. "A diamond necklace?" Rosalie gasped gleefully. "Oh my God! Eeeeee!" She squealed.
"Shh, you don't want to wake Mom up," I whispered quickly, pulling the necklace out. "You should try it on, Rosalie. It looks beautiful, and it would look fantastic on you." I held it out for her.
"Um, maybe I shouldn't...and maybe we shouldn't sell it, either. It's somebody else's really expensive diamond. What if they need it?" Rosalie became worried once again. My wide grin faded and I sighed.
"Well, if we won't sell it, at least just try it on." I glanced at her. "Please? I want to see how it looks on you."
Rosalie looked at me with her big brown eyes and finally gave it, grabbing the necklace. "Fine," she said as she unclasped the necklace and wrapped it around her neck. "But you'd better not--" The second the necklace was clasped around her neck, everything around us went black and we gasped, grabbing each other immediately as we fell into a void, becoming dizzier and dizzier until we went unconscious.
