The young boy sat on the elegant furniture, his Growlithe by his side. The boy clinched his fists, waiting in anticipation, as he dreaded the news that was to inevitably to come. As he sat there, the drawing room's door slowly opened, and a violet haired woman emerged, along with her mustached husband.
"James.. There's someone we'd like you to meet.."
"Yes, Mother, Father," the boy replied dutifully, though it was really all a lie.
"You may come in, Jessebelle," The man known as "Father" coaxed.
A young girl, around the age of the boy himself, with crimson hair, styled in two elegantly curled pigtails, stepped out of the shadows. A polite smile was upon her lips, and she curtsied. But there was a gleam in the girl's eyes as she stared at the boy. A look that said : " I will remake you, you will belong to me. You will be who I say you shall be."
The boy knew it then. He would not ever take this girl to be his bride one day, though he knew it was what "Mother" and "Father" willed. As soon as he was old enough, he would leave this dull life behind him, never to look back.
James woke up in a cold sweat. He was once again thinking of the moment he truly wanted to leave his pampered life. Gasping, he leaned against the tree he was sleeping under with the rest of his team. Jessebelle, just like his own parents, had wanted to make him into a person he could never be. They had only made him miserable, no matter how much they tried to cover it up with all the luxuries they showered on him.
"James?" A sleepy voice broke into his thoughts.
He shifted his attention to the groggy Jessie, who had just awoken.
"Oh.. I'm sorry I woke you up.. Please, go back to sleep. You need your beauty rest, right?" James smiled at her weakly.
Crawling out of her sleeping bag, Jessie sat next to him, putting an arm on his shoulder.
"You know, by now, I can tell when you're upset. What's wrong, James?" Jessie asked, concern flickering in her indigo eyes.
Looking away, James said nothing. He hardly ever discussed his past much with Jessie, with exception the few occasions he was forced to.
"James, you know you can tell me anything," Jessie said softly.
"Well.. Lately, I've been thinking about my parents.. And Jessebelle.." James admitted.
A flash of something that looked suspiciously like envy glazed over Jessie's face at the mention of 'Jessebelle'.
"Have you been regretting.. Being a team with us?" Jessie questioned.
"No.. It's just.. I hate it, being chased by my parents, and Jessebelle only makes it worse," James thought back to the many times he had almost been forced to leave his life with Team Rocket.
"You know, we all have painful or unbearable pasts we'd rather forget ever knowing," A shadow of sorrow seemed to pass over Jessie's face as she told him.
"That's why we have to look forward to the bright things in life, like we did yesterday, having fun together, not worrying about the twerps or anything," James grinned, taking one of Jessie's hands in his own.
"Well, we are Team Rocket, it's our job to worry about the twerps and pleasing the boss with rare Pokemon," Jessie laughed.
"That's true," James remarked.
That's right..though I may not be able to change my life then, I can change what I am, in the here and now, James realized, relaxing a bit.
"Night, James," Jessie yawned.
"You too, Jess."
