I wake up to the sound of birds chirping and singing. I look around to see that I'm not in my room, actually far from it. I'm laying on the ground, right next to the phone which is laying right beside me.
Everything comes back to me. My conversation with doctor Chasm, the fact that my brother has already begun planning the funeral.
I need to pack.
My eyes swell up with tears. I squeeze my eyes shut, no Sam, don't cry. You've cried enough for now.
Keep your mind occupied. That's it, think of other things, your going to pack bags for a trip. That's it, a nice Hawaiian Holliday trip.
I get up placing the phone back in its rightful place. I make my way to my room and take out a luggage bag and start placing clothes. How long will I be gone? Probably a week or two, trips don't last too much longer than that.
I pack enough for a few weeks then zip my bag shut and drag the bag to the door. I open the closet and take out my jacket, it's only a fall jacket. I hope winter doesn't come too early this year.
I slip into my old sneakers. I'm not going anywhere too fancy.
I glance around my apartment. Is there something I forgot? Shaking my head I open the door, nah, it's just a feeling.
I make my way down to the lobby.
"Good morning Miss Wilter." Thomas the door man greats with his usual morning smile.
"Good morning Thomas."
He opens the door for her. "Where are you headed this early in the morning?"
She smile politely. "I'm going on a trip."
He smiles back. "Have a nice trip Miss Wilter."
I nod and step outside. The moment I'm outside in the busy air, I hail a cab. When I climb in with my bag, I direct him to the airport.
"Where ya going miss?" The cab driver asked turning into the left lane.
"Up North." I tell him, all the way back home.
He chuckles, it sound more of a sound a gargoyle would make when it laughs but non the less it was a chuckle.
"How far? Alaska?"
I shake my head and look out the window, away from the aging cab driver and towards the life filled morning streets of Chicago.
"No, not that far. I'm headed to Kenora." Back home.
"Where's that? I've never heard of it." He says.
A smile creeps its way on my face. Of course not, he's American. Not many know places unless they travel.
"It's in Canada."
"Why ya headed there? Ain't it cold there?"
The smile vanishes when I remember why I'm going.
"No, not always." I say avoiding the reason why I'm going.
I can't keep pretending this is a holiday, who goes to Kenora for a get away? No one, except crazy people. I'd rather go to Mexico, or France, Spain, even Germany. Not Canada.
The cab driver doesn't say anything more and neither do I. My eyes stayed glued to the streets. To random people doing everyday things. I try to do everything possible to keep my mind off of where I'm going and why I'm going back, but when my phone chimes I'm brought one step closer to my past.
I look at the text.
When will you be here? I read.
I typed out my answer, Hopefully in 13h.
