My confidence is slipping away from my grasp.

Today is aptitude testing. I am Abnegation, but I am not selfless. I can't be selfless enough to grow up like my parents. To not care for myself. To always be thinking of others and never what's best for myself. I know if I leave, I will abandon and degrade myself from my parents. But I have to, I don't fit in.

Besides, Abnegation is selfish if they're thinking every Abnegation-born will choose their faction. So much for selflessness. If they really weren't selfish, they would encourage to choose what's best for you.

I sit on a wooden fence, scraping my teeth at an apple. The neighborhood is quiet, it always is. I wear my short, blond hair in a tight braid like I always do. My skin is pale again my dark gray clothes. On my feet are different colored socks covered by flats. Just a sign of rebellion, that not all people in Abnegation are "Stiffs".

"You nervous, Alice?" Cienna, my twin sister, asks. She clenches her hands in fists and smiles, but I can see sweat beading on the back of her neck and her legs trembling. I bite the side of my cheek, because I feel the same way. My head is spinning and my hands turn clammy. "How would I not be?" I reply, forcing a smile. She nods and frowns. She's always been Abnegation at heart.

The bus moans and creaks to a stop in front of us. I slide down from the top of the fence and follow Cienna in. The bus groans and the gray houses fly past us. I draw in a deep breath and watch as the Abnegation headquarters fades into the morning sky. Erudite and Dauntless walk around in the streets, laughing or talking. Then the school pulls up ahead of the bus.

I flash a smile at the bus driver and leap down onto the cement. The crowd of Abnegation disperses and I walk as fast as I can to the doors. I slip in and skirt the walls as I head towards the Dauntless trains. Beatrice is there again. I sit behind her, waiting silently. Then the train comes. Dauntless-born kids scream with delight and leap out of the cars, groups of them. I smile, wondering what I would be like as a Dauntless. Free, daring, almost fearless to do anything.

Beatrice sighs and starts to turn. I quietly slip away before she catches a glimpse of me. I've done this every day. Slip away, watch the Dauntless with Beatrice, then fade away into the crowd again.

I shuffle into the glass math room. "Hey Stiff, what's up?" a Erudite boy snickers. I shake my head and sit. "What's the matter, Stiff? Cat got your tongue? I thought Stiffs are supposed to be selfless and kind, you're not too kind right now," a Dauntless boy jeers. "Guys, quit it. She's had enough," a Candor boy says. They just roll their eyes and sit as our Erudite teacher walks in. I flash a smile at the boy, but he ignores me.

It feels like forever until aptitude tests are finally ready to be taken. I sit in between Cienna and Aaron, one of my friends. The volunteers call our names one by one. "Cienna Adlington!" a reasonably young Amity girl says with a perky smile. Cienna squeezes my hand for a second, then nearly trips over her own feet as she walks towards the volunteer.

She comes out about ten minutes later, her face buried in her palms. She's sobbing her eyes out and trembles vigourously. I start to comfort her, then freeze as if I had just been turned into stone. "Alice Adlington."
