Prologue
The last thing I remembered was running. Running for my life from the dark creature that had once been my father. Its voice was dark, deep. I have never heard anything so terrifying in my life. As I entered the forest, almost all of the moon's light was gone, the leaves obscuring what was left of it. I heard the stream in the far distance. I had to get to the other side. I could save my father. That thought kept me going, through the thorns, bushes, and other obstacles. The demon was gaining on me. I had him almost where I wanted him. Then I fell. I tripped on a root. I couldn't get up. I saw my father, or his body, tower before me. His hands went around my head and twisted my neck. My vision went black. I was dead.
My eyes flew open. I got up off the ground. I looked around and saw a body at my feet. His head was turned the wrong way. Suddenly, realization hit me. That body was me. It was MY head turned the wrong way. I was dead. I turned around and there was a young girl in front of me. Her hair was curled into perfect blonde ringlets and were held back with a blue bow. She had a pristine white dress made of what looked like silk. I opened my mouth, but she talked first. "I am the Angel of Death. You are dead, Michael. Now because you have died for the greater good of others, I will give you a choice. You may come with me, or stay here and help the one who will finish your task."I thought long and hard on this. I was only fourteen, too young to die. But it seems like I had anyway. I looked at the angel and she nodded her head, as if she read my mind. She probably did, to be honest. "You need rules for your new.... life. You must never intentionally harm any of the living. If you do make contact with them, tell them that you must remain a secret. If more than one of the living population learns of your existence, then you will go mad." she sighed "Be careful." and she was gone.
Chapter One.
Amelia's POV ♀
"Amy!! Are you finished?" I sigh. It was moving today. To some old fishing town. Nothing was there. Absolutely nothing. Well, a small grocery store and a seafood restaurant don't count for much, do they? There will be no kids my age in that town, but at least there is a mall in the next town over. Mum needed this though. Dad had left us two years ago for some slut named Patricia. She was beautiful, I'll give her that, but she still took my dad from me and I will forever hate her for it. All mum wanted was to start over, and the idea of moving in with her parents seemed wonderful. I loved them though. My grandmother used to take me out to the woods of her house. We would play together by the river all day. Tea parties, story telling, and hide and go seek. I even had an imaginary friend. His name was Michael. He had brown hair and blue eyes. Tall, and absolutely hilarious. I was a bit of a loner then, so I needed a friend, real or not. When Grandma was asleep, he would tell me ghost stories. I guess that's how I got into them. I laughed at myself, thinking about my adventures as a child. My new life won't be THAT bad. I will always have the stream to think at, and there has to be SOME people there, right? I pulled my red hair into a messy bun and carried my last box into the truck.
My mum smiles at me "I'm proud of you sweetheart. Thank you for bearing with me. You'll make new friends! I'm sure of it!" I shake my head slightly. I don't have friends. I am the girl who still thinks of her imaginary friend. The girl who is too nervous to try to talk. I'm the kind of girl who hides behind a good book, wishing that I, too, could have an amazing adventure like the character in my books do.
The ride seems like a small eternity. I was asleep most of the time though, so I had no room to talk. Mum was tired though. I turn on the radio to keep the both of us awake. I listen to the singer wail all his feelings into the mic. I kind of feel bad for him. I change the station and a happier song is on. "That is much better." says Mum "Yeah, it will keep you up too." She laughs at my comment and simply nods her head. We talk about what will happen in the new town. I will go to a small highschool, only about 1200 students in all. Mum will be a temp at a big company. After awhile, we drive up to a big, white house with a red tin roof and a wrap-around porch. My grandparent's house! I bolt out the door and swing open the old screen door. I knock once and my grandfather opens it and engulfs me in a huge bear hug. "Can't... Breath" I gasp and he lets go, laughing. "So how was your trip, Amelia?" "It was so long, Grandpa! I am so glad to be standing!" "What is all this commotion about?" I hear my grandmother say. "Oohh deary me! You are taller than me Amelia! That just isn't fair!" I giggle and walk inside. I know this is going to be great. As I am walking in, I thought I saw another figure in the corner of my eye, but there is nothing there. Chills go up my spine. I feel as if someone is watching me.
