What Good Are Remnants?

Advice from Floor Store Vice President Bret Lowder

Over the years, I've learned that a lot of people shopping for carpet or rugs go out of their way to avoid the section of the store marked "remnants." It seems that, for them, the word has a negative connotation, as if it meant "leftover," or "throwaway."

Well, it does. And that's exactly what makes them a great deal.

At The Floor Store, for instance, the remnants are not necessarily discontinued products, but may simply be the small amount left over (there's that word) when the rest of the roll has been sold. That piece obviously didn't fit the last purchaser's needs, but may well be enough for you to carpet an entire room - or it could be bound (the edges finished with a strip of fabric) to make a custom-sized area rug. The retailer knows that this depends on the right shopper finding the right remnant, and in the meantime they don't want them taking up a lot of space. So they are priced to do one thing: move out of the store.

This means you can find a remnant from a roll of top-of-the-line 100% wool carpet at a price far less, even including the binding, than you would pay for a rug of similar quality. All it takes is a little luck to come across a size that works for you. How to maximize your luck? Keep looking - because every store makes new ones every day.

So don't let the word "remnant" throw you. They may be leftovers, but they're also windfalls.
