Once upon a time, there was a kingdom under the sea. This underwater land still exists, but only the bravest and most kind-hearted people can visit. That is a different story for a different time though. This is a story of being different, chasing dreams, and losing everything for doing so. This is a story about love and the need for adventure. This is a story about the littlest lesbian mermaid princess, Teil.
Teil was one of the seven daughters of King Triton. She was not the most obedient daughter, nor was she the sweetest. However, she was the most intelligent by far, and she was never hesitant to speak her mind, no matter the penalty. Not many people look for these qualities when searching for friends though. Teil wanted to have friends, and she wanted to have a happy relationship with her father and her sisters. However, she was brutally honest and Teil just could not force herself to suffer through conversation with merfolk much less intelligent than herself.
Teil loved gardening. She had the most envied underwater garden under the sea. It was filled with luminous pearls and iridescent coral. There were even a few land plants that her grandmother brought her back from some of her trips to the surface. She had obtained bubbles of oxygen from passing sea creatures to ensure that her surface plants could breathe, and she traded quite a number of seedlings from her plants to the sea witch, Anchiale, for a sun stone, in order to simulate sunlight. Needless to say, Teil truly LOVED her garden.
There were only two things that Teil found amiss in her otherwise perfect life. One was the fact that she wanted to find a lover. She wanted someone to hold, and love. Many mermen pined for her attention, and that was fine. There was only one problem. She wanted to find the perfect mermaid to treat as her queen. Teil was a lesbian, and that was completely fine. However, there were not many other lesbians in her kingdom. As in, there were not any aside from herself.
The other issue Teil had, was the fact that she wanted to see the surface world. In the kingdom, no common merfolk were allowed to visit the surface, but those of royal blood could visit the surface upon reaching their 16th birthday. As Teil's 16th birthday crept closer and closer, she began to feel a nervous excitement settle in her stomach. She could not eat, nor could she sleep. Finally, her 16th birthday arrived, and her sisters began to fawn over "fixing her" for her first trip to the "above water place". She did not understand why she could not decorate herself. Teil did not like all the attention, so she shoved her sisters away from her, and she began to dismantle the work they had completed on her tail and hair.
"Why must you be so difficult Teil?!" her eldest sister asked with an exasperated sigh.
"I am not being difficult sister. I merely realize that I would look much better with my own plants decorating my tail, and I would smell much less like a harlot with my own perfume upon my wrists," Teil answered sweetly.
"May we at least style your hair, little one?" begged her favorite sister.
Teil offered a small grin to Triton's fourth daughter, "You may style my hair missus," she replied, giving her sister a small, playful bow.
As all the other sisters swam away in utter frustration, the fourth daughter set to work, transforming Teil's shaggy and dead ended hair into a more feminine cut. When she was done, Teil's hair resembled that of a punk pixie's. Her sister had dyed it a luminous white. She also made a small crown of glowing black pearls and ruby red hyacinths to go upon Teil's head.
"Oh sister!" Teil said with a gasp, when her sister held up some polished glass for Teil to access her appearance in.
"You do like it, don't you?" her sister asked, wringing her hands in worry.
"Oh, I love it!" cried Teil. She had never felt pretty before, but as she fawned over her reflection in the looking glass, she felt beautiful.
"Well, that is all I am doing, your tail decor is completely up to you babydoll," Teil's sister said with an encouraging smile upon her face.
As her sister swam away, Teil began to make her way to her garden to figure out how to decorate her tail for her first surface visit, even though it would not be for a few more hours. She swam through her sprawling garden, searching for the perfect colors to match her crown. She grabbed a few red pearls and then some of her darker petals from her lavender plant. Next, she picked out a few luminous white crystals and some black lilies.
"This will do," she muttered to herself, "I don't want to be too weighted down with decoration."
Later that night, as she she was putting the finishing touches on her tail, her father swam into her room and came to rest beside her.
"Your mother would be so proud to see this moment," he told her, with tears in his eyes.
"Yeah well my mother is dead, so could you please get out," she spit with venom.
"How about you stop being such an ungrateful little wench!" her father yelled.
"You aren't going to ruin this for me father," she calmly stated. "I am leaving to go to the surface. Goodbye," she said curtly, and she proceeded to move away from him and start swimming upwards.
Her head broke the surface, and she gasped at the moon and all of the stars. It was so beautiful, and the oxygen tasted sweeter than honeysuckle fresh from the vine! She swam towards a shape in the distance, and she found, to her immense joy, a large ship. And it was covered in strange creatures! She swam closer and looked into one of the portholes to find a young girl watching a box with moving pictures.
"What magic is this?" she asked in wonder.
She was so focused on the magic box, that she did not notice that the girl had turned to look out the porthole and found, whatever Teil was. The girl had no idea. The girl came to the window and tapped on the glass. Teil looked up to see the strange creature looking at her in amazement. Teil knew that she should be afraid, but for some reason she was not. Teil gave a small grin, showing off her fanged teeth. The young girl jumped slightly, but then she put her face up against the glass to take a better look. And that was when all hell broke loose.
The ship slammed into a large cliff, and it immediately began to take on water. The girl had fallen over from the force of the impact, and she was now clambering to stand on shaking legs. Teil was filled with nausea upon seeing the girl's cabin begin to fill with seawater. The girl looked on with terror-filled eyes and quaking hands. As soon as she regained mobility, Teil swam around to the breach in the hull. By this time the part of the ship that the girl was in, had become submerged in water.
She dove through the hole and began searching for the girl's room. Teil made her way through the ship, to the unconscious girls body. As soon as she had a firm grip upon the girl, she began to make her way back into the ocean. Teil, pushing the girl in front of herself, broke the surface of the water, and she began her trek to land.
It was nearing sunrise by the time Teil made it to land. She dragged the girl upon the sand and began pushing her flowing red hair back from upon her face. She was beautiful. The girl had fiery red hair and porcelain skin. From what Teil had seen on the ship, she had seafoam green eyes and perfect pearl-like teeth. It seemed like hours that Teil laid in the sand beside the girl admiring her perfection, but it had probably only been a few minutes before the girl began coughing up seawater.
The girl began making unintelligible noises, and Teil looked on in worry.
"Hello? Girl?" Teil asked, gently shaking the girl in attempt to wake her up. "Miss, are you alright?"
The girl coughed a few more times before beginning to speak, "Who w-what are you?"
"My name is Teil, and I am a mermaid," Teil gently whispered, in awe of the creature before her.
"Why exactly are you staring at me?" the girl asked in a thick scottish tone.
"O-oh. Well I have never seen a whatever you are," Teil said with a light blush over her cheeks.
"I'm a human being. And my name is Ana'Maria," the girl responded before letting out a large yawn.
"You're tired," Teil pointed out, "I will leave you to get some rest."
"WAIT!" Ana'Maria shouted, now wide awake, "will you come back to visit me?"
"If that is your wish, m'lady," responded Teil in a teasing tone.
As Teil dove back into the sea, she could not help but wonder, was this girl her queen? As soon as she arrived home, she went to the sea witch and begged for a potion to turn her tail into two dainty legs.
"Why in the world would you want to become a human!?" screeched Anchiale, "They are completely helpless creatures. They cannot even breathe under water."
"Please Anchiale! I will do anything to become a human! I think I have found my queen," Teil cried.
Anchiale pondered this for a moment. "I will do this, but what will you be willing to do in payment?" she asked with a sly look.
"I will do anything," Teil answered calmly, with a steely look of determination in her eyes.
Anchiale gave Teil a sweet grin before stating, "I want your soul. You may have a potion to transform you into a human, and you may even have a potion to transform yourself back into a mermaid, BUT once you reach the age of 275, your soul will be mine. Do you understand?"
Teil swallowed hard before responding, "Yes. I understand Anchiale. I agree to your terms."
"Then let us begin," the sorceress answered with a twisted grin.
She mixed two potions. One would turn Teil into a human, and the other would turn her back to a sea creature.
Teil swam to the beach and drank the first potion. It made her head swim and her vision blacked near the edges. However, upon looking to the place where her tail would normally be. Instead of finding an iridescent beautiful tail, she found two thin perfect appendages.
"I-I have legs," she whispered with a gasp, "LEGS. This is fantastic!" She cried out in happiness. Teil jumped up, and she began her unsteady journey toward the castle that she spied near the cliffs.
It was nearing sunset by the the time Teil reached the white marble and gilded gold castle. She knocked on the cathedral-like wooden doors and waited. An extremely young boy answered the door.
"How may I assist you madam?" he inquired while looking towards the pristine floors.
"I am requesting an audience with princess Ana'Maria," Teil responded, while attempting at a smile.
"The princess is accepting no visitors at the moment," the boy answered.
"Tell her it is Teil," she responded.
"I don't think that the princess wants to see anyone," the boy responded in a cool tone.
"Just tell her my name. Please!?" Teil begged in desperation.
The boy hesitated, "Fine. I guess I can see what I can do," he grudgingly replied.
The boy came back a few moments later and led her into an extremely large foyer, "Wait here," he instructed
"TEIL!" screamed Ana'Maria, before tackling Teil to the floor in a bear hug.
"Well, hello there princess," Came Teil's muffled response.
"What are you doing here, and how do you have..." Ana'Maria glanced around to ensure that they were indeed alone, "...how do you have legs?"
"That doesn't matter right now! All that matters is the proposal I have for you m'lady," Teil answered in excitement.
"What is it?" asked Ana'Maria enthusiastically.
"What do you say to leaving this world behind? How would you like to live for 300 years under the sea with me?" asked Teil hopefully.
"I-I don't understand Teil. Is that even possible?" Ana'Maria asked in confusion.
"I have this potion that has the ability to transform me back into a mermaid, and I can go back and get you some. But only if you want to! You don't have to. I'll be fine. I'll go back alone if you want. I'm sorry. I'll just leave," Teil said, beginning to ramble and stutter.
"Teil. Calm down. Yes. That would be fantastic. I would love to go back with you, and we can be the best of friends in your underwater land!" Ana'Maria stated in complete happiness.
"Could we maybe be more than friends?" asked Teil nervously.
Ana'Maria began blinking rather rapidly until understanding dawned upon her. "OH. Do you-do you really mean it?" she asked shyly.
"Yes. I truly do. Ana'Maria, princess of Rioghachd, will you come back to my underwater realm, and become my queen?" Teil asked in complete sincerity.
"Wait. You said your realm, like it belongs to you," Ana'Maria stated suspiciously.
"Ah yes. I am the youngest princess of my father, King Triton's, children. There are seven of us, including myself. We do not have to be around them though," Teil responded nonchalantly.
"Well okay then," Ana'Maria said with a loud laugh, "may we go?"
"I have to go and convince Anchiale to create more transformation potion for you. I will have to pay a hefty fine, how much are you willing to give for your happily ever after?" Teil asked.
"How high do you believe the price could get?" Ana'Maria asked hesitantly.
"I paid with my soul, but I get to live 275 years before I have to hand myself over. However, that was for two potions. You wouldn't have to pay with your afterlife. I would never allow that to happen. So I ask once more, how much are you willing to pay?" Teil asked in a calculating tone.
"You gave up your soul just to come visit me!?" Ana'Maria ordered angrily.
"Yes," responded Teil, "You are worth everything to me."
"O-okay," Ana'Maria whispered shakily, "I am willing to pay anything, even if that means giving up my soul."
"Meet me here tomorrow morning love. I will have your happiness in a bottle come sunrise," Teil responded, giving Ana'Maria a chaste kiss before downing her draught.
Ana'Maria kept post there with burning cheeks many minutes after Teil had departed.
Teil dove down into the depths with inhuman speed, and immediately swam to Anchiale's cave.
"Madam, I need one more favor, and I am willing to pay you another soul if you do as I ask," Teil said in a single breath.
"And what is your request princess?" asked the witch with a grin.
"I want one more transformation potion. I want to turn my queen into a mermaid, like myself," Teil responded hopefully.
"Alright. I get another soul, correct?" asked Anchiale in irritation.
"Correct missus," replied Teil with lowered eyes.
"One moment," said the sea witch as she disappeared behind a curtain and began mixing a potion. She came out a moment later, "Give this to the girl and she shall become a mermaid."
"Thank you," Teil responded, before practically flying out of Anchiale's cave.
She swam to the beach just as the sun was breaking the cloud banks. There, upon the sand sat Ana'Maria, waiting. Teil swam to her lover and gently handed her the potion.
"Here my love, now we can be together forever," Teil whispered.
Ana'Maria stood up, downing the bottle, and she began to sway. She fell into the surf, right into Teil's waiting arms.
"I should have warned you. It does make you quite dizzy," Teil apologized.
"It is alright dear," Ana'Maria responded with a small smile.
Teil took her soulless mate's face in her hands, and kissed her, slowly, yet full of passion and love.
"Come my queen," she said with a grin, after pulling away, "We have a kingdom to destroy."
