Chapter 1 prologue/ introduction

Lights beamed onto my face as I walked along the alleyway leading away from the club. The strong smell of smoke pot and alcohol filled the air. I stumbled feeling dizzy but got straight back up again. I had been down this alleyway a million times before, but at night it was filled with drunks and homeless people walking around at all hours of the night. They started stared at me as I walked on and I felt scared and self-conscious, I needed to call a taxi home and get out of here.

I moaned as my head throbbed from too many drinks at the club that night. I looked around trying to find a taxi but it was deserted. I decided to just walk the rest of the way home; it wouldn't be too far, maybe an hour at the most. I took the next turn out of the alleyway when I heard footsteps behind me. I looked around my shoulder to see a boy maybe in his late teens walking behind me; it was hard to tell with him wearing a hoodie.

I started to fast walk; looking back every ten seconds but he didn't change his direction. By now I started running for it, I ran across the road only just missing being hit by a car.

I raced down the street in a mini skirt, high heels and a singlet top with black fish net stockings. Out of all nights I had chosen to wear high heels, just great not only could I not run being drunk but also my heels were slowing me down. I took my heels off and pelted down the other end of the street screaming.

Breathless I didn't stop running and cold air whipped across my face. I didn't look back either, just kept running straight ahead. I could almost feel his breath on my neck leaving him just inches away from me. I fell over myself and hit my head with a loud muffled yelp. He grabbed me by the waist and covered my mouth with his hand. I screamed as loud as I could but it didn't work, no one was around at twelve o'clock at night; it was like a ghost town.

I yelped and started kicking and shoving him but he kept his grip tight and was unwilling to let go. "What do you want from me?" I said, but my attacker didn't answer. I pulled away numerous times but he shoved me into the ground until I stopped. Glass dug into my head from the broken bottle lying next to me, piercing into my soft pale skin. Warm blood oozed out from my cuts and I felt like I was about to pass out. I reached for my phone in my pocket but I stopped short when he brought his knife up to my waist. I kicked him screaming again over and over again.

I screamed for help once more until my lungs burned, but help didn't come. Cold dirty feelings ran across me neck, and something sharp grazed against my skin as he held me on his lap. The moon shone through the trees, giving a cold white glow over the town. I felt a sudden shiver of coldness run down my back and the extreme weather was unbearable. I was in the middle of nowhere, ages from the house and my mobile was smashes on the ground next to me. I stayed there in the dark with the moon by my side, watching me as I faded into the darkness.

I woke to the sounds of traffic. I was lying in the middle of the walkway with everyone walking past me as if I wasn't there. I stood up a tried to get my bearings but nothing looked familiar. I was lost lying bloodied in the middle of the pathway. Surprisingly no pain came to me as I stood up but only showing my cuts and bruises from last night. I walked slowly back, making my way back to the house. I couldn't understand why nobody had noticed my blood covered skirt, and then along with cuts covering my whole body, it was just range not to see a reaction.

The front door flung open as I walked into the house. I closed the door behind me instead of letting the cold air in. Mum walked out of the kitchen with a sigh and tears running down her face. I walked towards her alarmed and gave her a hug. Just as soon as I had my arms around her it seemed my touch had frightened her.

Mum leapt out of chair within a second and raced to the wall dropping her arms across her chest in tears. "Mum what's wrong, are you okay?" I rested my hand on my mother's shoulder but only to hear screams of terror. Maybe it was the sight of my clothes and blood that's scared her off?

Mum's coffee mug smashed on the floorboards leaving bits of broken cup and coffee spilt. "Mum what's up it's me, I'm okay now." But I knew no matter how many times I repeated myself she wouldn't seem to hear me. It felt like she couldn't even see me. Mum flinched and grabbed her car keys from the kitchen bench and went out the door. Just as she passed me single piece of paper fell to the ground. I picked it up before racing out to mum.

Locking the car doors mum started the car, giving me no time to jump in with her. "Mum!" I yelled after her as she sped away, but she didn't stop. I sat on the front porch and I unfolded the piece of paper to look at. I gasped at the sight of it. In bold lettering was, 'School Girl Beckii Logue Found Dead' and a photo of me. It was an article from the newspaper. I looked out to the road and screamed.

As the cold wind runs chills up my back I wait back inside for mum to return. Why didn't she say anything, why would she just take off like that? As I boiled the kettle I turned the television on and made it load enough to hear from the kitchen. I didn't normally watch the new, but I had nothing better to do while I waited for mum.

I unfolded the article from my jeans, my hands trembling. I had been missing for two weeks. Mum must have been worried sick and I could only imagine what she must have been feeling to find her daughter never returning that late Sunday night.

The memories flashed back and I started trembling at the horrific scene of Sunday night. No wonder mum had freaked after she saw me, she must have thought she was seeing things. But the way she acted I couldn't be sure; I was beginning to think I was going insane.
