They were swinging at the playground, the cold breeze chilling Jennifer to the bone.
"Want my jacket?" Josh asked, noticing her chattering teeth.
"No. It's fine." Jen smiled, but Josh took it off and wrapped it around her shoulders anyway.
"Thanks." The nine year old Jen said.
They sat in silence for a while, both doing what they did so well; thinking.
"What do you want to be when you grow up?" Josh asked suddenly.
"Um..." Jennifer hesitated. She had never considered her future. Maybe a Prince Charming would come or...
Josh noticed her watching him, and took this moment to grab her hand in his.
"Do you know what I wanna be?" His eyes lit up.
"What?" Jen smiled.
"Famous. And rich, too." He grinned. Jennifer laughed at the thought. She knew deep down no one could simply get famous, especially rich. She didn't say this to Josh, though, in case it hurt his feelings.
"What do you want to be famous for?" She questioned.
Josh got up and began to act it out as he spoke.
"First, I will learn guitar and be a rockstar," he started playing air guitar, "then I will join a band called...the Joshinators," he grinned, "then we will travel the world and play awesome tours!" He ran around in circles with his arms outstretched like he was a plane, and Jen giggled.
"You're crazy." She laughed as he sat down again.
"Yeah, but mum says if I really try hard, maybe it will come true." He shrugged.
"Well, I will be at every one of your tours." Jen smiled.
"I'll make sure you have front row seats everytime." Josh smiled back, and grabbed her hand once more as they sat in a comfortable silence.*7 Years Later*
Jen's POV
I stood there outside his house, the sun shining at my feet, but it wasn't such a happy day. He trudged out of the house carrying three bags.
I rushed over to help him, only to be told not to. He threw them in the truck and turned to me. I didn't want to break the silence, but it was torture not talking to him.
"Why do you have to go?" I asked the stupid question that was all I could say.
"You know why. New York is where my parents have to be. And unfortunately I have to follow." Josh said, barely making eye contact with me.
"I'm trying so hard to look on the bright side but..."
"But there is none?" Josh finished for me, and I nodded, feeling tears well in my eyes.
"Hey. None of that." He groaned, wrapping his arms around me. I buried my head in his shoulder and let the tears fall.
"What happened to going to all my tours, huh? Don't back out now." He laughed quietly, and I smiled slightly through the tears.
"Message me and tell me the location and time and I'll be there." I laughed, and he stroked my hair gently.
"Even if it's 5am here and I wake you?" He pulled away to see my eyes.
"Especially when it's 5am." I smiled, and he took me in his arms again.
"Who knows, New York City might hold the big break I've been looking for." Josh whispered.
"Maybe." I said, although I was lying. I was unsure if Josh would ever get his 'big break'.
"Ready Josh?" His dad called from the front door, carrying some boxes.
Josh gave me a tight squeeze before breaking apart, but by then the tears were heavy.
"I'll call you if I see any cute guys for ya in New York." He said, backing away to the car.
"Sounds great." I said, but I was rolling my eyes.
He laughed and opened the car door, standing there and looking at me.
"What are you waiting for?" I raised my eyebrows.
"You." He said with a pout, and I struggled to hold in the tears that time.
"Keep it cool Hutcherson." I yelled.
"Keep it cool Lawrence." He yelled back.
I blew him a kiss and he caught it in the air, before putting his hand to his heart.
He then disappeared into the car, and like that, he was gone.
"Goodbye Jen." His parents gave me a quick hug before getting into the car and backing out. The truck followed them with their furniture and I walked onto the road, watching them go.
I felt, for the first time since meeting Josh, alone.
And it was the worst feeling I had ever encountered.//
