Ugh. I overslept again. Alyssa’s and Lexine’s beds have already been made. It was 7:24. Great! We had a school mass at 7:30. How the heck am I supposed to dress up and eat?? Fortunately I caught sight of a blue bowl of Quaker Oats oatmeal on my table. God bless this person’s soul, whoever prepared it.
I eat while changing to my bland gray Sunday attire. I donned a gray shirt that spelled “EDSOR” in blue words and brown slacks. Its not that hard multitasking especially when you’re in a hurry. Time pressures you. Pressure makes me eat real quick. In twenty seconds, I finish my oatmeal. After two minutes which was long enough for me to get dressed, I bolted out of the door and started for the Poveda Chapel below my dormitory.
I finally reached the chapel just in time to hear the opening ceremony begin. I can’t believe we had a great choir. Their voices sounded like angels and seraphims swooping down on earth, helping injured people from war. I genuflected and took my place in the front pew exclusively for the War Council Members. I am getting used to being a leader.
I tried not to sleep or yawn while Father Santos told us about hope and faith during trials and adversity. I am getting sleepier everyday. Maybe its because my body was adjusting to my post comatosis-effects.
After the mass, everyone rushed outside to catch a breath of fresh air. I saw Rani and Steffi pass by. “Rani, Steffi, how are the uniforms?”
Rani turned and saluted me. Steffi stared blankly at me and did the same. Her eyes were red. “Steffi, is there anything wrong?”, I asked, concerned.
“I pricked my finger seven times while sewing the undergarments”, she groaned.
“Take it easy pal”, I chuckle.
“I am done with ten hard armor suits. We have a hundred talented assistants and they’re working pretty well. The war’s on October 16 right?”
Right. That was my birthday. I am gonna die on my birthday. Nice gift.
“How many warriors have you measured?”, I ask eagerly.
“Hmm…about three thousand”
My heart skipped a beat. “I beg your pardon Miss Chan?”, I asked.
“Three thousand four hundred to be exact”, she calculated.
“That’s a thousand more than I expected!”, I exclaimed gleefully. “We can really get ahead in this war!”. I shouldn’t have said that. Rani and Steffi had sullen faces. Their shoulders were slumping towards the ground.
“President, RadioWarZone has been infiltrated by the Militician forces!”, Joshua called out.
“It can’t be!”, I yelled. I turned back to Rani and Steffi. “Keep doing what you both love and you’ll get far. Dream big and aim high”
“But what if we all die in war? We can’t reach our dreams anymore”, Steffi said as she wiped away a tear from her eye.
“Never lose hope. We’ll all be rewarded once we’ve done our part in this world”, I said as I quickly saluted to them. “Joshua, when did this happen?”
“Erin saw the wires of the radio cut into shreds. It will take two months to fix those. Not even Malcolm can detect the problem. Its sabotage!”
I breathed in and out. “We can still use the War Council microphones….”
“They’re also missing. Our communication lines from the outside world have all been breached”
Without thinking, I screamed. There’s no point in holding back your anger once you’ve tried to keep it inside of yourself.
