Chapter 4

"Amelia!" William screamed as I fell. Time seemed to slow down just then. It felt like I was falling really slowly toward my death. I sensed everything that was going on around me. I heard the creek running, felt the wind being disturbed by the mosquitoes in the air, I tasted the sap coming from the trees, smelled the sweat coming off William and saw the slow, steady beats of a hummingbirds wings. I was aware of everything, and I thought, 'Is this what it's like right before you die?'

I felt a sudden jerk as I was caught, and then dropped. I must've blacked out for a second because when I came to, William was leaning over me, a look of concern on his handsome, perfect face.

"Are you okay?" William asked.

"I-" I tried, before I went into a fit of coughs. Every time this happened, it felt like my lungs were going to be coughed out. It hurt my throat and made me tired and sore when I finished.

When I finally finished, I looked into Williams eyes, and said the only thing I could before I blacked out.

"Help..."

. . .

"Amelia?" I asked. She was lying down on the ground, barely breathing. And her leg...

"Oh my god, Amelia, your leg." I said as I examined the black, oozing stump connected to her thigh. My dog, Buster, came up to me and sniffed Amelia's leg. He growled and backed away.

"What is it Bus? What's wrong?" I asked the bloodhound. Buster was a hell hound, but a trained one, like Trixy and Spirt. Buster was my favorite, and the most reliable. I'm taking care if Trixy and Spirt for my uncle, but Buster is mine. He loves me and is trained to do just about anything. That includes sniff out underworldly creations.

"What's going on Buster?" I asked the anxious hound. Little did I know, that I was about to be caught in the middle of the battle that could save or destroy the world.

. . .

As my vision started to clear, I was aware of a few things. First, I was on the ground. Not good. Second, two things were to my left. The one right next to me was humanoid, the second wasn't. Third, it was night changing to dawn, and last, I could feel my leg.

I jerked as I realized this, and in so doing, I caused the humanoid mass to jerk. The mass went still. I sighed in relief and rolled a few feet to the right. When I got to the stump of a nearby tree, I started to climb. I climbed as high as I dared and watched the sun rise in the East.

I vaguely remember what happened at my house the last time I was there. The nightmare, the talk, the betrayal. Then the lab. And my horrible excuse for a mom, actually believing I would trust her again. What I can't comprehend though, is what my mom said to reassure me at the labs when I woke from my drugged stupor. She was saying something that was like a song and a conversation all mixed into one language. With a few words, I was reassured that everything was alright, that everything would be okay.

Ad i pondered all of this, I heard rustling below, bringing me back from my deep thoughts. I looked down in the light the rising sun provided. A man was getting up from where I was a few minutes ago. The man sat up and rubbed his eyes, and looked at the spot I was when I woke up.

"Amelia?" I vaguely heard from below.

"Amelia!" The man screamed. It was William! He quickly got to his feet and looked around. As he was rushing around, the mass that was next to him began to stir. It rolled into the tree and stretched. It looked like a dogs shadow, but I couldn't tell with so little light. The shadow stood up and trotted up to William.
