7 year old Caroline bolted out of her front door heading straight into the woods as fast as her feet could take her. It's all my fault... I ruined everything She thought trying to hold in the tears as fled what would be the last of her parents arguments. Caroline ran through the trees blindly due to the thick cover the leaves provided blinking away her now rapidly falling tears when her feet caught a uprooted branch knocking her down and sending her rolling. Her screams for help filled the wooded area and suddenly she stopped and found herself in the arms of a strange man. He sat her down gently looking her over but never touching her "does anything hurt little one?" She looked at him in awe when she heard his accent. "My name is Niklaus"
"I'm Caroline"
"How old are you Caroline?"
"Almost 8"
They stared at one another for a minute before anyone spoke "Why are you so sad?" she said reaching up and placing her small hand over his heart. "I can feel it, you feel alone" she added looking into his eyes. "What are you doing out here at this time of night?"
"My father doesn't want me anymore. He told me he's not my real father and now he's getting ready to leave... it's all my fault" she sniffed. Klaus surprised himself when sat down and wiped away the little girl's tears. "My father didn't want me either because I wasn't his real son" he whispered before he could catch himself unsure of why he'd shared the information. "I'm so sorry, are you okay?" she asked suddenly throwing her arms around his neck and rubbing his back. It made him smile, genuinely smile; less than a second ago she was upset but pushed her own problems aside to comfort him. They sat stargazing for a while before she began to yawn. "Can you help me?" I was so sad that I was just running then I fell, I don't know which way to go" she blushed. "Hop up" He smiled letting her climb onto his back "close your eyes" and when she did he picked up her trail and followed it all the way back to her porch. "That was super fast. How did you do that?"
"I'll tell you another time"
"So we can talk again?" she said excitedly. "Whatever you wish Caroline"
"See you tomorrow Niklaus"
Every night they met in the woods unless it rained or when it was too cold, then he'd visit her in her room. First they talked about Caroline's day, then he told her a story about an adventure he'd had with his family. "Nik did you really do all the things in your story?"
"Every one my lovely, how about I tell you in tonight's story" he sighed stretching out and gazing at the stars and she laid next to him.
"Over 1000 years ago my five siblings and I lived here in Mystic Falls with our parents. One night there was a solar eclipse, that's when the sun and the moon comes out at the same time and the werewolves in the next village turned."
Caroline looked at Nik with wide eyes listening to his story, he had already told her about witches, werewolves and vampires; she even knew that he was a vampire. "Our little brother Henrik was killed by one... My mother was a very powerful witch and to protect us she made us immortal, the very first immortals; do you remember the story about The Mikaelson Originals Caroline?" She nodded her head never saying a word. "My siblings and I are The Originals. My full name is Niklaus Mikaelson; and this is my little sister Rebekah" He said grabbing Caroline and pushing her behind him. "So this is her, Caroline? You sneak away every night to spend time with a little girl"
"Leave her be Rebekah"
"I don't wish to harm her brother, she's shown me something that I'd never thought I'd see again... She brings out your humanity" Rebekah smiled kneeling in front of Caroline. "I've never had a sister"
"Me either" Caroline shrugged beaming at Rebekah. "Well you do now little Caroline"
