Prologue
How I found about zombies was actually a pretty funny story. I was sitting in the pool, with my little sister Flora, who's four years old. We took a few minutes to get used to the water, and then we splashed each other for a good ten minutes, finally we decided to just sit in the pool and relax.
Then my sister lifted her head, and knit her brows together in confusion. "Mommy?" She cried out softly. Her amber eyes looking behind me in a mix of confusion and fear.
"Flora, mom is inside taking a nap."I rolled my eyes slightly, but it was such a small eye roll you couldn't even see it. I loved my sister. I really do. But she gets confused a lot. Our mother had gone inside to take a nap. A neighbor's dog had bitten her a few days ago, she didn't feel to well.
"No, Mommy is right there." Flora said while pointing a chubby index finger behind me. I turned around, and could not believe what I had seen. I started backing away at the sight of my mother. Wait, this was not my mother. She was gone.
She was still in her rove, but it had been cut and torn exposing her arms. My mother had foam and blood dripping down her face starting from her mouth. Her arms and legs were flaky, pale, and full of viens. Her eyes were small, beady, and black with bloodshot red in the corners of her eyes. Her eyelashes fell off, her usual light brown hair was matted with blood and had knots everywhere.
I was in the back of the pool when I picked up Flora, and slipped out the pool, but then my mother let out an inhumanly scream, and flung herself in the deep water. I put Flora down, and told her to close her eyes after she hid behind me. I quietly picked up a big chunk of concrete with a grunt (it had fell off our stairs a few weeks ago) lifted it above my head, and threw it at the deep water. It landed on my mother, who was halfway to us in the pool.
It crushed her torso, but it wouldn't hold her for long. I picked up Flora and inside. I ran to my room, dried Flora off with a towel, and gave myself a quick pat. Then I got out my huge backpack with wheels and stuffed in some undergarments, a tank top, two t-shirts, a pair of shorts, jogging pants, and a fleece.
Soon after I ran to Flora's room, set her down, and packed a lot of the same clothes for her as I did for me. But I also stuffed in an extra sweater. I slid on her white flower sandals and picked her back up I ran to the hall closet and picked up my brothers old bat. I rolled the bat between my hands, remembering when he left it two years ago before he left.
I stuffed it into my book bag. Amazingly, it fit. I picked Flora up, and raced out the front door, wheeling the backpack behind me. My heart raced as I heard a scream from somewhere far, just not far enough.
