Luke walked through the hall of FortWorth High School with his head down to avoid everyone's eyes.To his luck someone sticks out their foot making the tall lanky boy stumble then fall on his hands and knees.
The crowd in the hallway bursts out into laughter making the boy blush in embarrassment .
"What a loser"a muscular guy named Shaun laughs. He wraps his varsity jacket clad arm around the girl next to him.
"You're right about that!"the girl says.
This was normal for Luke Hemmings.
People pick on him in school a lot.Normally it's jokes about his height or plain name calling but lately the jokes have been getting crueler and crueler. It has definitely taken a toll on Luke. He's a lot more quiet and cautious. His parents have also started to take notice. They ask him daily about his day but he always responds with a simple "fine" and retreats to his room until dinner.
At school it's no different. Luke carries his lanky body from class to class, sitting in the back of the class each time. He avoids confrontations but somehow they always seem to find him.
After dusting himself off, he got up and stumbled to his locker. He put his books in it and grabbed his backpack.
Enough was enough .
Ignoring the warning bell to get to class, he walked over to the gym and picked up a bat.
He then proceeded to walk outside to the parking lot where he spotted Shaun's car . It was a bright red and had been recently washed because Luke could see his reflection in it. The image staring back at him was horrid. His blonde fringe was messily sprawled across his forehead and his eyes were dark.
With a look of determination, he swung hard and fast and busted the window. He did it over and over again till a teacher on break noticed him. She yelled for him to to stop but he didn't. With each hit, Luke felt more and more alive.
He kept hitting the car over and over again . He wanted it to look the way he felt on the inside.....broken and bruised.
He didn't know how long he hit the car but he figured it was long enough for that said teacher to go and get help because she came back with the school police and the principal .
"Lucas ! Put the bat down!"he yelled.
"We'll have no choice but to arrest you if you don't !"the school police shouted at him proceeding to walk slowly towards him.
Luke dropped the bat with a "conk"and fell down to his knees . He hadn't noticed that he was crying until he felt the cool wetness on his cheeks.
"I-I uh....I didn't mean..." He tried to say but his words wouldn't come out.
He'd just completely demolished the boys red car.He had taken all of his anger out on it .The worst part was that he liked it ..............................
That's how he ended up in the principle's office ,the following day with his parents seated next to him in the grey uncomfortable seats.
The guidance counsellor and the principle were sitting across from them.
"Lucas is an exeptional student regardless of what happened yesterday"the principle announced looking at his grades on the computer.
Luke was a honor student. Earning some of the top marks in his class, particularly in math. No surprise there, his mum being a math teacher. He was under the constant watch of his mum since he was little. Mostly because he was the youngest of her three children.
"But he seems to have been distracted lately..."the guidance counsellor commented.
Luke met with the guidance counsellor once every week to talk about his "problems". It was supposed to help him deal with everything he was feeling but he would instead sit in her office for the entire hour sitting quietly , staring at his converse.
He didn't really feel like opening up to her. Sure she's a nice lady , but it doesn't feel right gushing his soul to a 30 year old woman.
So he prefers staying quiet.
"We believe that he can benefit from this "the principal tells his parents handing them a brochure for "Dealing with teens with depression".
He points to the bottom of the page which read"Sydney Treatment Centers"
"Oh hell no! "Luke thinks beginning to panic.
Luke looks at his parents in disbelief as his parents actually look at the treatment options.
Luke doesn't want to be sent away.
Sure his life here isn't great but moving away to a place of crazy people far from home .
Away from his parents ,his brothers....okay well maybe that part wasn't so bad but he'd miss his parents.
"You guys can't be serious about this?!?" Luke interjects.
"I think it'll help you Luke "his mother responded back at him.
He looked at his father for backing up."Yeah Luke, maybe this is what you needed."
"We only want what's best for you"the guidance counsellor smiled slightly.
He sighed heavily leaning back into the chair.
