Let's just get one thing out of the way. When you're sixteen, poor, and half the size of everyone you go to school with, life can be hard. Don't get me wrong, I'm an honors student and have a good amount of friends, but sometimes when you look at your life compared to what you expected it to be when you were six, it depresses you.
I live in Utah. Utah, of all places I could have been born, I got stuck in the most boring place ever.
Summer just ended and tomorrow marks the first day of my junior year.
If this year is anything like last year, this will be the most uneventful year of my life.

I woke up super early just so I could straighten my bright blonde hair and throw on a coat of eyeliner. I was simplistic. After applying mascara to my eyelashes so I didn't look like a panda, my mom told me that she'd make me breakfast but the thought of school made me feel like hurling anyway, so I declined her offer and ran down the steps to the basement. My younger brother, Ford, had a makeshift bedroom in our unfinished basement. I took it upon myself to wake him creatively most mornings. I thought I should go all out on the first day of school so I pre-planned the whole to-do.
We had an extra freezer stowed away in the basement and I had placed the ingredients to my master plan in it an hour beforehand. I quietly opened the door, reached in, and grabbed what I needed.
Walking through the framing in between Ford's "room" and where we kept the freezer, my hand began to chill just by holding it. It almost made me feel bad for what I was about to do.
I outstretched my hand that was holding a bowl full of ice water so that way I wouldn't get wet. Turning my wrist quickly I watched the bowl dump its contents onto Ford's face.
Gasping for air, Ford shot out of bed and began running around the room like a headless chicken. He was in nothing but his boxers and his skin was covered in goosebumps.
Being the good sister that I am, I was already prepared for his mild case of hypothermia, and had a body-towel on hand. I picked up the green fabric and tossed it to Ford.
If looks could kill then I would've been dead right then and there.
"ALEXANDRIA ELIZABETH CARTER, WHY DID YOU POUR ICE ON MY FACE?" Ford said, sparing no time at all to put on the towel I so graciously gave him.
I blew my fourteen year old brother a kiss and said, "Welcome to the worst day of the year!" Then I turned on my heel and ran up the stairs before he could tackle me.
I ran out the door and hopped into my extremely beat up black Chevy cavalier and threw him into first gear. Just like that we were off to school.

I pulled up to Bellmont High and sat out inside of Henry--my car--for three more songs. I just really didn't want to go in yet. People who were already walking in kept looking at me while I jammed out to 5SOS. Sue me, their hot."SHE LOOKS SO PERFECT STANDING THERE-"
Suddenly the passenger door opened and a guy I have never seen before hopped in. Without looking at me he reached up and turned the radio off.
"Hey! Who the freak do you think you are? "
The boy chuckled deeply, an admittedly attractive noise that had me envisioning an attack on his face from my lips. "I think I'm the guy who's going to save your social status this year."
I furrowed my brow. "Listen, jerk face, my social status is fine. I don't need your help saving anything."
The boy turned so I could see his face. Butterflies erupted in my stomach. He was beautiful. He flashed me a smile that showed a full row of straight, pearly whites. His eyes gleamed with a promise of an interesting year. The urge to jump him grew when he didn't take his eyes off mine.
"Oh, yes you do Sweetheart, and I'll tell you why."
I sat back in my seat and motioned for him to continue.
He chuckled again and began speaking. "I have know idea who you are. Plus you're sitting in your car instead of going inside to talk to your friends."
"Which is completely by choice, Princess," I said, getting agitated by this dumb stranger.
"Princess?" The boy's brown eyebrows shot up in surprise, but his smile never left his face.
I took a breath and calmed myself down. "It's just something I call people when I get mad," I said as passively as I could.
My acquaintance laughed at me. "That's cute. But if I get a nickname then it shouldn't be such a generic one."
I nodded. "Alright then what should I call you?"
Leaning in closer to me he reached his hand over for a handshake. "You can call me Luke."
