“Hello sir, I'm so very sorry to bother you, but I seemed to have misplaced my bus fair. I really need to get home; my mother must be very worried about me. Do you think you could possibly spare some money please?”
“Alright, I don’t see any harm in sparing a few bucks. How does ten dollars sound?” The little girl’s eyes lit up like a kitten that had just found a new ball of yarn. “Oh thank you sir! You are very kind!” She stuffed the cash in her jacket pocket and ran off. “Gets ‘em every time. Good thing I got money, I was getting hungry! With ten dollars I can get a meal for dinner later too!”
Now this little girl is not the crook she comes off to be, she is actually very sweet and very strong for a little girl her age. She had just turned thirteen today. She made sure that she had remembered her birthday, and her name. She figured those were the only special things about her and nothing else I mean, why else would her mother abandon her? She just wasn’t special. So she learned very young to live on her own, to take care of herself and that money was very important for living.
She lived in an ally way close to a strip mall.
“I’ll stop at the pizza shop by the ally. I can get a mini pizza; man my mouth is already watering!” She walked merrily along to the pizza shop; she walked in and was instantly surrounded by the smell of fresh pizza. The man behind the counter was very nice, his name was Eddy. “Why hello my little munchkin! Back again are ya, what would ya like?”
“Hello Eddy! I would like a mini pizza… with pepperonis please.”
“Of course, of course right away!” She looked at the price “Hmm its 3.65 already, I could make it a meal for 4.05…. Can I make that a single meal?”
“Yes of course!” He then fetched a mini pizza from the oven and put it in a small box, along with a big pickle. Then he grabbed a medium cup. “What kinda beverage would you like?”
“A juice would be fine, with no ice thank you.”
“One medium apple juice comin’ up!” He filled the cardboard cup to the brim with apple juice and gave it to her along with the pizza box. “Here you go, that would be four dollars and five cents!” she handed the man a five dollar bill, and he returned the change. Before she left the pizza parlor she said, “Thank you very much Eddy!” and was on her way to the ally.
When she got back, the dumpster was filled with new treasures. “Oh boy, I wonder what I could find in there! I bet there’s some good stuff!” she sat down and leaned against the dumpster and began to eat her food. She picked up the pickle and looked at it in disgust “Ugh, I hate pickles! Why does such a gross food have to be such a pretty green?” She tossed it back in the box and started eating her pizza. “Yum, now this is good! I haven’t had pizza in a long time! I think about a month at least, I deserve it, it is my birthday after all!” When she finished her apple juice and pizza she sighed happily and full. “That was delicious! Now I bet I could get a good amount of stuff out of that dumpster!” Her eyes lit up as she hopped in the dumpster. She dug to the very bottom and tossed out every garbage bag careful not to tare one open. Once she was done she hopped out of the dumpster and opened up each bag one by one, searching thoroughly. After about five bags she exclaimed, “Wow! I picked the rich neighborhood to live in didn’t I?” She pulled out a fancy gold watch, but she was unaware of the value she just thought it was pretty. “Look at it, it’s so sparkly! And it still works, did I hit the jackpot or what!” She put it on her right wrist and admired it. “Best ally way ever!” she continued searching and by the time she was done she had found, two non-used composition notebooks, a box of brand new colored pencils, and a big black and blue gym bag. “Eww this smells like someone washed it in sweat! Oh well, I need a bag anyway.” She put all her new things in the bag and threw it over her shoulder. Then she started tossing all the bags back in the dumpster, “Good find, it’s been a couple of hours now, the sun is starting to set. Let’s get a birthday dinner!” She walked out of the ally way with her new bag over her shoulder. She checked to make sure her cash was still in her pocket. “Okay good, I think I’ll go to the bakery and get a whole cake!”
