When Nepeta walked out of the cake shop she immediately dug into her cake. She walked and ate and was very pleased. “Wow this cake is delicious! I don’t think I’ve had cake this good since….” Nepeta’s spirit faded, she started tearing up. She wasn’t sure if she was happy or sad about the memories. “…Since I was six.” She walked on in silence until she got back to the ally.

“Well, home sweet h—” Nepeta stopped to see a little white kitten eating the pickle she had so much despised. “Hello there little kitty, what are you doing here?” She sat on her knees and pets the kitten as it nibbled at the pickle. “Lost your way little guy? You don’t have a collar, you seem like you haven’t just been lost. Your white fur is all dirty. You must be like me huh? That’s okay though, you don’t have to worry about people leaving you to rot little guy. I’ll be there for you okay?” The kitten purred as Nepeta scratched behind his ear. “You need a name little guy, one that you’ll respond to, how about Fluffy?” The kitten didn’t respond. “Okay, whiskers?”  The kitten continued to lick and nibble at the pickle. “Alright then, well you do seem to really like pickles… Lusus?” The kitten lifted its head and meowed.

“Okay, your name is now Lusus, and I will take very good care of you I promise.” She opened up the magenta box and finished her cake, tired from all the food but determined to give Lusus a bed, she found an old towel and laid it on the bottom of the box and papped it so the kitten would come to it. “Come here Lusus this is where you can sleep, I know it’s not much now but I can modify it later okay?” The kitten hopped into the box and settled in, Nepeta slid it closer to the dumpster. She kissed the kitten on its head before she hopped in the dumpster and fell asleep. “Good night Lusus.”

Nepeta woke up to thunder and screamed. “I hate thunder! And I hate getting wet!” She gasped and looked over the edge of the dumpster. “Oh Lusus, you poor baby here…” She climbed out of the dumpster and cradled her kitten. “Aw there, there now it will be alright. Why don’t you come and sleep in the dumpster with me?” She was careful not to harm or drop the kitten as she climbed back in and closed the top. “I have a feeling it’s going to rain. It wouldn’t just thunder for nothing right?”

In that moment the loud roar of thunder filled Nepeta’s ears. She curled up with her kitten in the corner of the dumpster. “I- its okay Lusus you’ll be alright, I promise. I’m here for you okay?” The kitten didn’t seem to be afraid of the thunder at all, he was warm and safe in Nepeta’s arms. And slowly but surely she began to flinch less at the sound of thunder. Ever since that night, Lusus and Nepeta would sleep side by side.

Nepeta and Lusus were like partners in crime. They always went everywhere together, this is the first true friend that she ever had and she was pretty sure that she was the first true friend Lusus has had either. When Nepeta had to go into a shop or store that didn’t allow pets, she would crouch down and whisper, “Go hide Lusus!” Then the kitten would run off until he was called back with a “Meow!” from Nepeta. Then Lusus would run to Nepeta and leap in her arms. Nepeta would even use Lusus as an excuse for money from strangers. “Play sleepy Lusus.” She would whisper to him. He would then curl up in her arms and pretend to be asleep. “Excuse me ma’am? I’m so very sorry to bother you, but my kitten is really hungry, she can barley walk. The poor thing… Do you think you could spare some change so I could feed my kitten?”

“Oh well I don’t see why not. As long as you’re feedin’ that kitty and not spendin’ the

money on candy then I can spare a good ten dollars to feed him. I know how high cat food prices are I have a cat myself.” She hands over the cash to Nepeta. “I promise I’ll spend the money on food. He’s my best friend I can’t just let him starve.” She walked away and once she turned the corner she would say “Good job Lusus!” Then he would pop up and give her the cutest look, and sometimes meow. “Let’s get some food! How about some pickles for you, and some pizza for me?” She walked along with Lusus in her
