"Please tell me school is over", I pleaded to my best friend Marissa, "Nope", she chuckled " two more lessons left and 8 more months".
"Ugh!, I hate you" I replyed rolling my eyes.
Then receiving one of Marissa's  spontaneous bear hugs, the same time the most aggravating school bell rung, causing me to jump,"I love you too" Marissa whispered in my ear then started walking away to her next class and shouted, "See you last lesson!".

I sighed, thinking of my next class, Life Orientation, which I hated by the way. I hated the same lectures every year about drugs, sex, the difference between right and wrong, it was the same thing every time.
I loved to be on my toes, learning new things and solving challenges every chance I got.
That's one if the reasons why I chose to study medicine after high school, I wasn't one of those A's Students and could sometimes be very lazy, but I had just managed to get an scholarship in a local university, which was great considering the fact that my mom would not have afforded to pay at least a month of fees without selling the house.
Dragging my feet into the class room, I thought of ways to escape this prison calles school, walking as slowly as I could to the back where I sat alone, most students didnt even notice me walk pass them, but that's the way I liked it, I hated being the centre of attention and disliked the thought of being one of the 'populars' it was just me and Marissa.

"Lift up your feet!" I heard behind me, that horrible squeaky  voice that only came from one teacher, Mrs Smith, the teacher who I actually thinks sending me to detention is one of her favourite hobbies. I looked up and noticed the whole class was now staring at me, giving me goosebumps and causing the hairs on my neck to rise.
"Late again I see" Mrs Smith said raising a eyebrow, "Get to your desk before I send you to the principal's office again!"
"Please, it would be an honor" I mumbled under my breath, being in Mr Kings office was better than having to deal with this teacher.

"What was that?"

"Nothing" I said sitting down and immediately starting to revise over my drama notes, I had a monologue tomorrow and hadn't even started studying .

"As I was saying, family is the one of the most important factors in a persons life......."Mrs Smith started.

I rehearsed lines silently.
"Let's start with you Nicole" I heard Mrs Smith say.
"What?"
"Tell us about your family"
Rolling my eyes, I put my notes down and said " I have a mother, who works as a Secretary and a younger sister whos in third grade"

"What about your father"

I felt a shiver down my spine.

"I don't remember my father."

The whole class turned again.
"And why is that?"
I hate this damn teacher! I thought, gritting my teeth.

"He left our family ten years ago, when my sister was born."
Silence....just dead silent. Everyone always goes silent, even when I told Marissa .But I understood, that people were thinking of what to say next, it's a very awkward situation to be stuck in and I always tried yo make it less awful.

"But its okay we're a happier family now, or something my mother says" I said trying to break the tension, but had regretted it as soon as I saw everyone's faces, people frowned and then had given her the look of sympathy.

I hated that look, I had been getting it before AND after her father left. Yes, he had abused her mother.....alot, but he was gone now, people should be happy.
But in a way the 'sympathy' look had helped my family in other life situations, like my mother had been 'promoted' from a cleaner to a Secretary plus it had just made Mrs Smith finally leave me alone for the rest of the lesson, so I didnt disapprove of it as much right now.

The next lesson was Science, which I really enjoyed, but the guys in my class were the most immature people I had ever met, they would crack the most stupidest joke and everyone would laugh, besides Marissa and I, who are practically the only two people who would like to learn something, mostly we would go to afternoon classes with the same teacher or would just read from the textbook ourselves , while Mr Havey, who was the Science teacher, who complain about the immaturity the whole lesson.
The class only had four girls and twelve boys. The other two girls were Jessica, who scored the most amazing scores for every test and always claim to have not studied and Pamella, who probably every guy could have dated.

"Have you started studying for drama?" Marissa asked, while listening to Mr Havey complain again and giggling at his red face.

"Nope, what about you" I replied

"Just the first few lines"

"Yeah, well I'm leaving straight after school so I can spend the rest of the day rehearsing" I replied with a groan

"Or, we can watch the boys play basketball today" Marissa said playfully raising both her eyebrows

"Or, maybe not"

Marissa rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to say something, when the bell rung.
I grabbed my bag and ran out of class, hearing my name being called out by Marissa.

Finally school was done, I could go home eat, watch some tv and just chill.
Putting my earphones on and pressing shuffle, I walked home in a good mood.

"Anyone home!" I shouted as I opened the door, only to be greeted by sniffing, I walked in quietly and followed the sounds to find my mother crying on the couch.

"Mom?"

My mother looking up with glassy eyes and a red nose and tissues on her lap

"Mom what happened!?"

"Your sister's in hospital."
