"Can I get that chocolate muffin please?" the woman asked pointing to the last chocolate muffin. As I grabbed the muffin I saw my mom walk in. "Can you give me a minute?" I asked the woman. "What are you doing here mom?" I asked. "I just wanted to see how you're doing," my mom said, "The cafe looks brand new and colorful, Mrs.Birlen did a wonderful job redecorating."
"Mom what's wrong, you've been crying haven't you." I asked her. I knew she would try to make up some excuse or something but I gave her a serious look. "Honey it's- please?" she said. It looked like she was about to cry or pass out, what happened?"Skyler, it's your brother" she said. "Shawn?" "The news said there was an ambush at his base camp, they don't know what's happened yet" she cried. "Mrs.Birlen, can I take the rest of the day off?" I asked. "Yeah, sure honey" she replied. " "Mom, let's go home." Thankfully I don't live with my mom I live in a little apartment close to my college campus, I decided to go to college at 18 and study to be a lawyer. I've always wanted to be lawyer for my dad but I'm doing it for me now, my dad left my family when I was 13 years old. He just left with no reason or word. My mom was depressed for awhile but she got better for us. My brother, Shawn has always been the man of our house but he joined the army 2 years ago, he's 24 now. Then there's me, Skyler I'm 20 and work at a cafe while studying to be a lawyer. I have some friends but graduating is more important to me, I used to have a boyfriend, Jackson but he cheated on me. "Honey he's gonna be fine" my mom said. Did she really believe that? Or was she trying to make me feel better.
"Do you know anything, anything at all!" my mom screamed. "Mom stop!" I said. We tried to figure if Shawn was safe but there was no answers. Then my phone started ringing. "Hello?" I asked answering the phone. "Hey, Skyler its me I'm fine I wasn't at the camp at the time." Shawn said to me. "Oh thank god!" my mom said. "We're coming home in a couple of days, I gotta go though, I love you guys." He said. "We love you to,bye." I said and hung up the phone. "He's okay mom, it's okay." I said and hugged her.
