I throw the bundle of sticks I found on the fire and sparks fly into the night sky.
I watch them disappear into thin air and sigh. I look down at my hand and see the pale, thin scar that I had collected from the fight that had only happened yesterday.
I shake my head at the logical side of my brain. There was no room for logic in my life now. Not sense I decided to continue my mother's work and avenge her in the process.
My stomach protests loudly bringing me out of my thoughts and reminding me I haven't eaten in over two days.
Looking around I see nothing that would feed me.
I pick up the shard once more and headed deeper into the woods.
Walking as quite as a cat, I kneel behind some bushes and wait.
Sometime later a huge rabbit slowly hops in font of my bush. I almost pounce on it, but something told me to wait. I watch the rabbit go on its way and wonder away from me.
I follow it silently. Then suddenly I hear a snap then a squeal. I run to were I last saw the rabbit. It was hanging upside down, I loosen the rope around its feet and inspect it.
The force of being pulled up broke its neck. I take the rabbit back to my fire.
After skinning, gutting, and placing it on the fire, I wait for it to cook.
As I watched it cook, I sensed a presence, but it wasn't evil. I gripped the shard. Just cause it isn't evil doesn't mean I shouldn't be cautious.
"You're going to burn it if you don't take it off soon." Said a husky voice.
"And you're going to get cut if you don't come out." I said staring directly at were I knew he was.
Just as I suspected, he came out were I was looking.
He was taller than me and had his hands up in surrender. He flipped his shaggy black hair out of his eyes. "Geeez. You don't have to be so aggressive. I'm just here to collect what's mine." He said eyeing the meat.
I raise my shard in his direction. "There's nothing here that's yours." I said calmly.
"That lovely rabbit you so kindly cooked for me is. You see, I was following you and saw you take it from the trap I had set." He said as if that would make me give it back without question.
"Please," I said sarcastically. "I got this rabbit fair and square."
He took a step closer.
"Don't." I said dangerously.
"Well, can't we share?" He said sincerely.
I look at him narrow my eyes. He's lying.
"Lier!" I almost sneered.
"Me?" He asked innocently.
"You plan to take it from me as soon as I let my guard down." I could almost feel his intentions, I was so focused on him.
"I would never." He said, but his eyes narrowed. He knew I was onto him.
"Lier. Once again. You know if you keep doing that, know one will ever trust you."
"I don't plan on trying to get them to trust me. At least, not for very long." He said then gave me a wolfy grin.
"See? Doesn't it feel better to be truthful?" I said giving him the same smile.
"Well, what am I going to do about you? I can't seem to influence you in my direction, nor can I go hungry. I usually prefer to be a gentleman, but you won't allow that." He reached for something in his coat pocket.
'Duck, roll, spin kick.' Something seemed to whisper on the wind.
Just as the whisper said, I was forced to duck as he pulled out a knife. I rolled when I hit the ground to his feet.
(Last part) I thought as I did a spin kick on the ground, knocking his feet out from under him.
I jumped up and straddled him. As I held the shard to his throat, some of my blood oozed onto his neck.
"Thought you were a gentleman?" I said close to his ear. "Gentleman don't attack women." I said coldly.
"Where did you learn that?" He said. Totally ignoring my remarks.
"I was told to be prepared." I said cautiously so not to give away my secret.
"My, my, my! You've got spirit!" He said almost sounding literal.
"Who sent you? Were you sent to kill me?" I asked pressing harder.
He looked me in the eye. "No." He said, but in that one word I heard much more.
Confusion.
Curiosity.
And one that made me lighten my pressure. Agitation.
"Why would I kill a seventeen year old?!" He said guessing my age perfectly.
(Definitely not lying.)
"I don't-"
Suddenly he shoved me off him and got to his feet.
I get back up as soon as I hit the ground.
"What the hell!" I said yelling at him.He stands there and stares at me. Like he just saw me for the first time. He looks me up and down and I become self-conscious about myself. I feel heat creeping up my neck and to my cheeks.
I was still wearing my PJs. The fire had burned my clothes into ash.
My silk shirt didn't leave much room for imagination.
"What are you looking at?" My almost a squeak.
"You look..."He couldn't finish his sentence. He couldn't seem to find the words, but my ability was telling me all I needed to know.
I blushed even harder at what coming through the connection.
"You look..." He tried again. "Beautiful." He breathed the word as if it would shatter if he said it louder.
"I...u...that..." I sputtered incoherent words, trying to find the right ones.
Then suddenly he was in front of me. Not a foot was between us.
I looked up and saw him staring down at me.
I immediately snap my head down staring at me feet. Still black.
He gently pulls my face back up to look him in the eyes.
Ever so slowly he leans down and kisses me deeply. I'm so shocked by the feelings that explode, that I kiss him back and wrap my arms around his neck.
I slipped into blissful darkness.
