Chapter Five

Eli stood back up and straightened his clothing. I looked up at him just in time for another speech.

"Mark my words, Harrius, if you ever try a stunt like that again the stake will be in your heart, not your kidney."

With those word said he had left. Hopefully for good, but who knows what he's planning with Ambrogio. Personally, I like Ambrogio; he's Callidora's father after all. But it wasn't just that, he was a respectable man. The reason he was cursed was because he was forbidden to see Selene and then went through multiple tasks to try and find a way they could be together. In the end he was cursed with silver and the sun burning the skin, immortality, and weaknesses to wood along with vervain. My point is that he went through hell, literally, all for love and I'd do the same for Callidora.

I grasped the wood that was still piercing my kidney and pulled it backward, trying to remove the foreign object from my body. As hard as I pulled, I just couldn't free my flesh from the pestering stick. I looked up at Callidora who was standing against the wall watching me struggle.

"Could I get some help here?" I strained out. She looked frozen, like she was glued to the wall. "Callie, I'm going to die if you don't help me."

My words seemed to hit home that time, thank God. She knelt down beside me and hesitantly grabbed onto the end of the piece of wood. Her eyes looked up to mine, asking if she may proceed. I nodded lightly, not want to puncture any arteries. She grunted as she pulled and finally I was free from the object that had left me immobile with great pain.

The only problem was that I needed to feed and Callidora's wrist wounds were still open. They weren't bleeding as much with the pressure from the rags but I could still smell the blood; not to mention that it was all over the room. I felt my vampiric senses taking over and knew instantly that my eyes were changing colour.

Callidora's eyes widened. She quickly retreated to her feet and bolted out of the room. My senses died down after some deep breaths and I got up to find her. I followed her scent of blood all the way to where I saw her run face first into Liam. "In a rush, love?" he joked. She turned round toward my direction and ran without looking.

When she saw me after colliding with my chest, she looked back to Liam. With nowhere to run, she collapsed to her knees and began crying hysterically. Liam was confused as she pulled her legs up to her chest, making herself into a human ball. I knelt down beside her and rubbed her back, it always seems to calm her down.

After her breathing was back to normal and tears had dried, I pulled a tiny glass vile out of my pocket. Callidora scooted away from me and I let her, not wanting to frighten her any further. Instead I looked at the bottle and decided to explain what it was.

"Callie, we're here to help you. None of us would ever dream of hurting you; you're all we live for. That's why I've brought you this. In this bottle is what's called Vervain. Tonight when Eli got into your head, you couldn't do anything about it. Whereas, if you take some of this everyday he cannot make you do things and if any vampire tries to attack you they will not be able to kill you. The Vervain weakens us instantly and you'll have the power over us."

As I waited for her to digest the new information, I handed her the small vile. She seemed to be examining it in her hands, turning it side to side and shaking it vigorously. It was a shame to see how distraught and disturbed her balance of peace had become from those horrific events.

I watched intently as she opened the vile. She smelt it and then placed it to her lips, throwing her head back and swallowing it all in one gulp. Then her body started to contort. My eyebrows furrowed, unaware of what was happening before me.

She screamed, "It burns! Why does it burn?!"

At the realisation of her words my eyes widened. Why was that happening? It's only supposed to happen if you're a vampire and we all know that she's a human.
