Is This The End?

Lars

We'd only had one customer all morning, and I was starting to get bored. Everything just seemed extra boring today. The weather was boring, the internet was boring, even taking a nap was boring at this point. I couldn't figure out what was making the day so dull- it was just like any other day. All well, I thought, and pulled out my phone. I was about to search my contacts for someone to chat with, when my phone vibrated. It was a message from Jenny.

"R you seeing this?" It read.

"What do u mean?" I texted back.

"Just look outside."

I figured it was probably a prank, but being pranked would at least subside my boredom, so I walked up to one of the Big Donut's windows and looked outside. At first nothing seemed amiss, but Jenny seemed to know I wouldn't see it. "Look up, dork." She texted, basically reading my mind. I moved my gaze upward and saw what she meant.

"Uh... Sadie? You might want to take a look at this."

Sadie

"What?" I turned towards Lars and paused sipping my coffee.

"Seriously you need to see this." He sounded pretty serious. I strolled next to where he was standing and followed his gaze out the window. Up in the sky was... An eyeball?

"What is it?" I gaped in awe at the massive thing.

"I... I don't know." Lars seemed to be at a loss for words. I saw a slight look of fear across his face.

"Does anyone else see this?"

"I dunno- Jenny just told me. What do we do?" He turned to me for advice. Why to me? I'm no good in serious situations!

"Uh... Maybe its just a trick of the light! Like... Like a red moon, or a solar eclipse." I attempted to apply reason to this situation.

"Do solar eclipses make a floating eye?" His voice cracked a little on the word 'eye'.

"I-I don't know, I'm just trying to help!"

"I know, I know... I just- I just don't know what to do..." Lars was pretty distraught. I'd never seen him like this before. The ground trembled briefly underneath us.

"Earthquakes?" I exclaimed, but the shaking stopped as quickly as it began. What was it your supposed to do in an earthquake again? I scoured my mind for the information. I would suggest we go outside, but that eye can't be safe... the tables? Worth a shot.

"I think we're supposed to stay under the counters!" I said with a shaking voice. Lars nodded, putting full trust in my decision, regardless if it was correct or not. We both ran back to the checkout counter and sat on the floor, the lip of the countertop slightly covering us in case the ceiling tried to collapse. Lars pulled out his phone and said he'd try and figure out if anyone else knew what this was about. For a moment we sat in silence as his thumbs flew across the keypad of his phone desperately. The floor shook briefly again, and I couldn't help but peek over the counter and through the window. The eye looked even closer now. It kind of reminded me of a certain video game...

"There's no signal in here! What the heck?" Lars blurted out, shattering the silence of the room.

"That's alright, we can still do-" a screeching sound of metal cut off me off mid-sentence. Lars and I both crawled out from our hiding spot and peered out the window to the sound's source. A van with painted designs decorating its sides, and the words 'Mr. Universe' on it, meandered past, dragging a weird pink contraption inside a red wagon behind it. "-this?" I finished my sentence, extremely confused. "Is that... Steven?"

"Steven? What is he doing??" Lars said. He opened the door and watched the van drive off to the beach.

"Lars, what are you doing? It's dangerous out there!"

"Probably just as dangerous as it is in here." He said, and stepped all the way outside, jogging to the boardwalk's edge. What is he thinking?! The floor started to rumble again, but this time it didn't stop. Products started falling off the shelves, and I feared the ceiling might be next.

"Wait!" I shouted, chasing after him. I paused next to him to look up, gasping at the sight. The eye was really close now, staring menacingly. It cast a fiery red glow across the sky and onto the land. Objects left and right started to hover in the air, slowly rising from the eye's gravitational pull. At this rate, the buildings might be next. There was nowhere to hide now. Is this it? Is this the end? I wondered fearfully.

"S-Sadie?"

I looked up at Lars, who was clenching his fists at his sides. "I think... This might be it." His voice shook as he tried to speak up over the loud rumbling and car alarms blaring in the distance.

I only managed a nod, at a loss for words.

"If this is really it, I need to tell you something." He looked into my eyes, real fear etched into his expression. Wind billowed around us- both of our hair fluttered around sporadically, and the hem of our uniforms tugged towards the eye in the slightest.

"What is it?" I asked, having to yell now to hear each other.

"Well- It's that... I... I..." Lars struggled to find the words to say what he wanted. The wind was so strong that I could hardly hear over it whistling past.

"You what?"

"I..... L-" A huge explosion cut his sentence off. We both turned to see the giant eye explode into pieces, shards pulled to earth and crashing in the sand. One large chunk landed on the boardwalk next to me, cracking and splintering the wood, leaving behind a gaping hole. I yelped and jumped closer to Lars, as if that would somehow stop the shards from landing on us.

We stood there in stunned silence, even after the debris stopped falling. I was the first to speak.

"Y-you ok?" I looked up at Lars, who was staring at a fixed point in the distance. My words snapped him out of his trance.

He looked down at me. "Yea, I'm- I'm fine."

But what were you going to say earlier? I wanted to ask, but it probably wasn't the best time to pry. I remembered I was still standing pretty close to him, so I awkwardly stepped away and cleared my throat.

"That happened... What now?"

He shrugged. "I guess we... Go home? After all that, I'm just surprised I'm alive right now."

"Mhm, same here..."

"I should probably drive you home though. I mean- in case something weird like that happens again." He looked at the now cloudy sky.

I rubbed my nose with my arm to hide my blushing face. "Yea, that's probably a good idea."
