His powers are a family genetic. They work like this his right hand is the one that can control blood. The left hand can control fire. Graylan comes from a long line of mages. The Evaniers were special they called the ones that hand the left and right handed powers pure bloods. But not many of the Evaniers carry this trait of the pure bloods anymore many can only use the power of fire in there dominent hand. But as for a pure blood the dominent hand uses blood as a weapon and in there none dominent hand they use fire but not as well as the ones with out the blood power. To get the genetics of the pure blood you must be born of two pure bloods or be bitten and have your blood drank by a pure blood and once you grow the fangs of the Evanier family you must drink the pure bloods blood also. If a pure blood is to drink blood they will gain power to use the blood for a short while before the blood dies in the pure bloods body but if someone drinks a pure bloods blood they can be healed but this will cost the pure blood and weaken them for a bit.
