Unknown POV

Two weeks before the ceremony

She ran her fingers through my hair. Singing beautiful songs in my ear, thinking I can't hear her.

I can.

I can imagine the tears in her eyes as she tries to wake me from a trance I put on myself. I can feel her heart breaking. She doesn't know that I have to break the only promise I've ever made: to be at the ceremony. She doesn't know that I want to kiss her gently in the hills, and sing songs about her. She doesn't know I love her, that I would marry her. But that would be the worst thing to do.

I am the King of Darkness and Despair.

That's why I have to push my best friend away. I have to protect her. Protect her from myself.

Now:

I'm at my own coronation.

I have to see 300 virgins be sacrificed. I have to feel their blood trickling through my shaking fingers. I have to smell the sickening smell of carnage and bloodshed. I have to hear the piercing screams as swords slice through their necks......

I have to...

"Sir!" my thoughts were interrupted by one of my guards.
"What?" I said irratibly.

"We only have 299 virgins."

"Have you got any spare?"

"No, sir, we have to tread on the Heart's land to find one."

"Do you have anyone in mind?"

"I have the perfect candidate."
