Chapter 3
I wake up of my own accord, for it was still dark in the cell. Dark. I dont believe it will ever be light.
Maybe I'lI be living in the dark for the rest of my life. If whoever works this hell house doesn't kill me first.I glance around and see the figure in the corner, curled into a ball shaking, but sleeping still.
If only I could fall back asleep; Wake up somewhere different. I gasped at the thought. What if all of this was just some maddening, terrifying and horror-filled nightmare. If it was, maybe I wouldn't die here. Maybe I could wake up and go with Lea, and... Mum.... Dad too... Do I even have parents? Who are they?
Suddenly something happened, like part of my brain had been brutally ripped out and been replaced with something new... Then without warning, I Remembered! I could perfectly picture Lea's face; Mum too! And... Dad! My father wore a happy smile and was shaking his head jokingly. We were having a picnic in the middle of a field littered with beautiful teal and magenta flowers, some tall and some short. I was chasing Lea and had just tripped over a log, but I was laughing. I could feel joy spreading through me as I got back up and Lea called out, her musical voice shattering the happy silence. 'Kyla! Come see what I found! It looks hurt!'
I found myself following my younger self to see what she found. She was pointing at a hurt bird lying on the ground. 'Oh no! Mummy come see here the birdie's hurt!' My young self said, with an edge of concern in my voice. My mother came around and opened her mouth to say something until a slit of burning white light shone into the room I was in, sending me onto the floor shivering. The light hurt so much. The white light contrasted so much to the normal horrible darkness.
Another figure was thrown into the cell. It seemed to be a teenage boy. In the light I finally managed to get a look at the person I had lain on the 'bed' on the other side of the room. Another boy. Great. I was in a room with two snoring teenage boys. The door slammed shut and I realised I was hungry. Hunger gnawed at my stomach like a lion, tearing my insides apart.
"So... Who are you?" A curious voice sounded from next to me and before I could process what happened I groaned, trying to fight off hunger "Im so hungry..." I said, getting cut off by the voice again. "Sohungry? What on earth were your parents thinking?" "Well Sohungry, My Name's Kam and the last time I was in this cell Im sure there wasn't a shivering girl in it." My fists clenched and I mentally told myself to stop shivering. Turning to face Kam, I loudly proclaimed "My name is..." I stopped short, realising I don't know my name. Suddenly Kam piped up. "It was a trick question, ya see, none of us have names here. I named myself after the first thing I saw, the name tag of the person who shoved the drug down my throat. So you gonna name youself or what?" He had a weird kind of accent, I couldn't figure it out. What was he playing at? The trick jokes and witty comments. I think he's the type you'd either love or hate...I thought back to when I had just came. Then without thought I decided a name. "Raina" I said, telling the boy my new name. "Well then Raina it is!" Kam proclaimed. I lay my back against the wall, heart pounding. "Kam, why did you go?"
"Go where?" He asked, I couldn't see, but I knew he had a confused face because it was in his tone.
"You said you were in here before me"
Kam paused for a minute, and I realised my heart was beating extremely fast. I took a few breaths and calmed down.
"I didn't leave. They pulled me out, as soon as I woke up, it took me 5 months to wake from my coma. The drug, if you remember"
My mouth slowly opened. It had only seemed to take me one to
four days to get out of mine.
"That's weird" I said,
"Not really, borokside is really strong." He replied quickly.
"It seemed to only take a few days to get out of mine, and what on earth I'd Borokside?
It took a few minutes to get a reply for that one.
"That sure is weird... And Borokside is a drug that knocks you out and wipes your memory..." Kam spoke, trailing off.
He threw something at me from across the room. It felt like a torch. I switched it on, suddenly conscious of how close we were. Kam had a handsome face, and as I looked my eyes seemed to set on him. "Earth to Raina?" Kam said, snapping me out of my trance. I glance at the floor in front of me and I realised he had something else at me. A shard of glass, lying on the floor. "What's this for?" I asked him curiously. "A: You always need something sharp" he said, pointing to the jagged edge "B: I thought you'd like to see yourself" he said, raising his eyebrow. I looked in the shard and and jumped back. There was a large bruise across my eye. "You must have been a feisty one when they brought you here." Kam commented "and that proves you've only been in a coma for two days or a bit more, otherwise you wouldn't still have that purple princess restin on your forehead would you?" His vocabulary was slightly... I don't know how to put it. Interesting. I glance in the shard again.
