"Camp Luna," Summer reads aloud as her step-mother, Sadie, drives them past the sign and to the camp.
Summer and Sadie have never really gotten along. She married Summer's father only a few years back. She and Summer are always bickering over something. Summer's younger brother, Jared, gets along with Sadie just fine though (still a real mystery). When the pair is around other people, Sadie tells everyone how proud she is of Summer's accomplishments (Summer only rolls her eyes when she does). Summer always felt as if Sadie was trying to replace her mother she loved so much and that may be the reason for their cold words.
They have been in the car alone for over an hour and have surprisingly not ripped each others heads off. Sadie is driving to where she had signed Summer up to be a camp counselor (without Summer's consent) a month prior. Sadie's motives being that Summer needed to 'get out of the house after staying in all day for a month to study for finals' and to 'practice her leadership skills'. Summer claims though, Sadie just wanted her out of the house for two months.
Camp Luna is a three week long summer camp for kids ages six through twelve. Camp counselors, however, ages seventeen and eighteen 'train' at the camp for two weeks to be experts on the camp plus an additional three weeks at the camp with the kids. Hell. Plus a week break in between the two and three week span.
Sadie pulls into the muddy parking lot of the camp, (which was mostly just an area cleared from trees and packed with dirt and gravel) and says, "Looks like it rained this morning."
"Obviously." Summer rolls her eyes.
Sadie parks somewhere along the side of the puddle, to avoid splashing her new expensive car.
"I need to get to work. I'm already late," Sadie pushes.
Summer replies with a sarcastic remark, "Thank you so much for your kind words and for driving me to where you signed me up to be a camp counselor and then complaining about it, Sadie."
"Thank god you'll be gone," Sadie mutters as Summer is climbing out of the car to fetch her backpack and duffel bags from the trunk.
Summer scoffs. "I heard that." Her three bags are packed with clothes, extra pairs of sneakers, hiking boots and all of the camping essentials for the next two weeks. She struggles keeping all of the straps on her shoulders.
Summer waves to Sadie with a fake smile. "Bye, I won't miss you," Summer says to Sadie's closed window which she can't hear through. Sadie reverses her expensive car into the mud, splashing Summer's lower shins and shoes. She doesn't know if Sadie had done it on purpose but she'll say she did to add to the list of reasons to dislike her (the list includes 'signed up to be a camp counselor' and 'complained about driving'; they add up quickly).
"Hey! Do you need help?" a stranger yells across the mud to her from one of the few cars in the lot. He looks like another camp counselor (in training). He slams the driver's door to his car with duffle bags resting on his shoulders and a backpack hanging off of his back.
Summer waves him off, "No! Thanks though." He puts his hand out, as if saying 'stay there', so she looks her mud covered legs as she waits. Her jean shorts are safe, high on her thighs; her lower shins and shoes getting most of the damage from Sadie.
"No, really! It looks like you need some help!"
"It's fine, I'm a big girl. See?" She shifts her stance and in the process, one of the bags slips off of her shoulder and into the wet dirt, almost making it into the wet puddle in front of her. She quickly reaches down for her bag and grabs the strap and slings it over her shoulder, hoping he didn't see.
When he arrives he says, "I can get that for you," and takes the extra bag and transfers it to his arm (turns out he did see). It was a helpful move on her part but didn't want to admit it. His cologne of 'bug spray' takes over her sense of smell.
Their eyes catch each other's for the first time. "Um, n-nice to meet you. I'm Summer." She puts her hand out to shake, keeping eye contact. He puts his hand in hers and shakes.
"Harry," his voice comes out hoarse. He clears his throat before repeating himself, "Harry." His voice being rough in contrast to her smooth one. Their previous confident attitudes dissolve into the person standing before them.
To Summer (and frankly, many other girls that meet him), he is absolutely breathtaking. To Harry, her beauty is intimidating. Both stand there not speaking, astonished at the other.
Harry notices her slightly curly hair in a high messy ponytail and the longest tips only reaching the base of her neck with fly aways in every direction. He notices a probably unintentional makeup line under her left eye from her eyeliner. He notices her eyes, what color are they? He notices her lips. Plump and pink. His eyes go back to hers, seriously debating if he should ask her the color. His first thought was that her eyes were hazel. Obviously not, though, because he had just seen a hint of blue.
Their encounter becoming more and more out of the ordinary as the seconds pass on, still not breaking eye contact. The two of them, knowing that it has now become too long of a moment to just brush off, turn it into a stand off on who will break first. Summer sees something change in Harry's eyes and Harry, something in hers. His gaze not admiring her anymore but challenging her, not that she minds, anyway. Summer straightens her back, trying to make herself taller to show dominance (obviously failing, due to his height). Harry knows exactly what she's doing and stands up straighter as well.
"Looks like there are advantages to being almost 6 feet tall," he teases. Not noticing it before, his slight English accent taking Summer by surprise. We're in America, mister, Summer thinks. He barely had an accent but it was still there and still noticeable.
"We should get inside. It looks like it's going to rain." Summer smirks and struts off, slightly flustered. She uses the dark sky as an excuse to get away (It had been like that all day).
As she walks ahead of him, he tries to wipe the smile off his face after winning his first match (out of many) to Summer Dunn.
