He quickly put the pendant in a small plastic bag. He went outside to the waiting limo. "The nearest Zales please." He called to the chauffeur.
He waited, fiddling with the bag, wondering is she would like it. He was always insecure when it came to her.
He stepped out the Limo, and rushed into the Zales."May I please get a necklace?" He asked the salesperson politely. "Of course, did you have anything in mind?" She said as she brought out necklaces. "Preferably one without a charm." He said, look at her directly. She looked at him puzzled. "Ok, silver or gold." She said, still looking confused.
"Silver please." He said, watching her move toward the plain necklaces.
She pulled out one. "How about this?" She asked. "That's perfect, thank you." He said, not once looking up from the necklace. He took out the bead, and put it on the chain. Perfect. He though to himself."Where did you get that bead? It's beautiful." And older woman asked. "It's not for sale anywhere in afraid." He replied, still not looking up. "That'll be $68.00 ." Said the cashier. He pulled out $100. "Keep the change." He said, still enchanted with the beauty of the necklace. Everyone in the store gaped as he walked out.
He shuffled into the limo, careful not to drop the necklace. He fiddled with the pendent as he watched the scenery pass. It beautiful. But not as beautiful as her. Nothing is as beautiful as her.
He stepped out the limo, and into his apartment building. He walked into the limo and pressed the 34th floor, the highest floor. Their floor.
He walked in to see her on the balcony. He snook up behind her, trying not make a sound. He covered her eyes from behind. "Guess who." He said. "Teddy I know it's you." She laughed.
Her laugh gives me life. He thought.
"I got you something." He said, taking his arms off her eyes. "Oh I wonder what it could be." She teased. "Turn around." He said, looking her in the eye. She slowly turned. He lifted her hair and put the necklace on, slightly grazing his fingertips on the back of her neck.
She looked down and gasped. "It's beautiful. Did you make this?" She said, her eyes not leaving the pendant. "Only for you." He said, with a loving gaze. She looked down. "Please don't. You know the only reason I won't is because I don't want to jeopardize our friendship. What would happen if we break up." She said, tears filling her eyes.
He sighed and looked down. "We wouldn't break up because I love you." "I love you too but, I can't. At least not yet. Give me a week. I'll make up my mind. I promise." She said, with a fierce look of determination in her eyes.
"Of course. Good night Eliza." He said, a sad look resting in his eyes.
"Good night Everest."
