I am just an ordinary girl turning eighteen. I want the same things that people want. Family, happiness, safety, adventure, and love. There's nothing special in me. Just a small town girl with a simple life. But fate is just so cruel. My parents died a year ago, and since then my life can't seem to find happiness; so is love.
"Morning," Gemma greeted me as I went downstairs. Gemma, in her mid-thirties, looked younger with her brunette hair, green eyes, and tan complexion. Ever since my parents died she had taken me under her wing. She's my mom's sister, and she's the only one who accepted me since no one in the family would want to take care of the sole reason why two very kind people died because of her wrong doings. Gemma is the only one who is brave and kind enough to take me in.
"Mornin'," I greeted back, taking a toast and a cup of coffee that she prepared for me.
"Today's you're big day," she said as she sat down on the other side of the table.
"Yep, senior year," I answered dryly.
"Not excited?" she asked considerately. "You don't have to punish yourself forever Kath."
"I'm just not excited about this year," I answered honestly.
"It's senior year. You should be happy you're finally out of prison. You know the prison called high school, right?" she asked trying to lighten up the mood.
"Thanks Gem," I thanked her sincerely. I don't know what to do if she didn't take me in.
"You know I'll always be here for you, right?" she asked as she held my hand.
I nodded.
"Okay, we're getting a little bit dramatic right now, so go now before we end up crying like babies here," she said as she got up and collected the dishes. I can't help but laugh.
"Yeah. I know George won't like to hear his feisty little girlfriend cry early in the morning," I teased as I picked up my bag and left.
"Ha-ha. Funny. Be home by six!" she added as I went out the door.
I'm still laughing when a honk caught my attention. I turned around to see Joshua, my best friend, driving his old 1963 mustang.
"That's a charming new development," he teased. "Haven't heard your laugh since the French Revolution."
"Good morning too, Josh," I said with a hint of sarcasm as I get in the car.
"Seriously, it's good to hear you laugh. What happened?" he asked later as he navigated through the Penstone road. Penstone is a little town with only a small population. It is founded by the Clenestones, Youngbloods, Petersnons, and the Crestwells. And I am a Crestwell. My ancestors found this place back in the 1800's or something.
"You're lost in the oblivion again," he said as he snapped at me.
"Sorry. Just not excited about this year," I admitted.
"Come on Kath. It's senior year. It is our last year to get drunk and have fun before college comes," he said as we enter the school premises.
"You mean this is your last year to have fun with girls," I teased him as I get out of the car.
"Maybe, maybe not," he answered as he locked the car. "You know the college girls are way hotter than these girls," he added playfully as he eyed the cheerleaders getting slutty again to senior boys.
"Yeah, and way slutter," I said as I eyed them too.
"You're just jealous because their way prettier than you," he teased.
"Oh thanks for the compliment. I'd rather be an invisible, ugly girl than a whore with big boobs," I dismissed him as I enter my class since we're not in the same class.
This is gonna be a long day.
