What was this? Nissa. Did I not get enough sleep? Nissa. How could a card glow? Nissa. This all seemed too weird for a regular night. The guy who gave me the card wasn't even strange. He seemed average, he was tall, taller than me at least, and his black hair was in a ponytail. He had been wearing a dark jacket, but that wasn't weird either.
Nissa.
I had no idea what was going on.
Nissa!
Should I run? Should I call the cops? What should I do?
Stay calm. Just stay calm.
That's all I could do. I just looked down at my hands.
Nissa.
My face was mirrored in the smooth material of the card. My reflection warped and changed, swirled and contorted until it wasn't me. This was my dragon, my faithful dragon. His smooth voice echoed in my head.
Don't be afraid, my dear. You have been chosen as the blood bearer. You must vow now and forever to protect others, or lose this gift.
What gift? I thought, confused.
"But I'm just a girl," I whispered.
You have a heart none can match. Be true, and it will all come together soon enough.
"But, I don't understand," I whined, "I want to know what you want me to do; who you want me to protect!"
You have given your oath, now sleep. All this will make sense in the morning.
A dull hum inside my head lulled me to sleep, right there, on the floor in the middle of my room.

I woke up to the sun shining through my window. Sunday morning. I'm not a churchgoer, so it wasn't a big deal if I slept late. I walked down my stairs and saw a note on the fridge.
Nissa: I had to go to the hospital. Its your Nana. She's sick again. They say its her lungs this time. There's pizza in the fridge or $20 for Chinese. Love you ~ mum
Well isn't this just delightful? I pressed my forehead against the door, feeling some relief from the cool metal on my skin. I skipped breakfast (although it was noon) and decided to take a shower. I stuck my iPod onto my speakers and started playing my music. As I stepped into the shower, "Live to Rise" by Soundgarden started playing.
I knew all the lyrics, and began singing them, word for word, at the top of my voice.
"What if all you understand, could fit into the center of our hand? Then you found it wasn't you who held the sum of everything you knew?"
We're insane, but not alone.
These beautiful words, so true now.
"What if the one thing that I missed was everything I need to pass the test? And if I fail what happens then? Can I still count on you as a friend?"
How fragile our world is... as the song faded, so did my voice. After another song, I finished my shower and began combing the matted mess that was my flame red hair. Once I stepped out of the bathroom I decided to watch some Netflix. Code Lyoko or Doctor Who? I'll decide when I get there.
