CHAPTER 2
"SCARLET WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?!' my father screams. It's not much of a scream though. He doesn't have a loud voice. I got that from my mom. I climb out of bed and stomp towards his room, irritated that I cant get any peace and quiet in this house.
"What?" I ask.
"Dont 'what' me! When I call you, you drop everything and get your ass over here!" he yells.
I discreetly roll my eyes, turn to stare at the peach colored wall and say nothing. I've learned the hard way its best to not talk back. Sometimes though, it slips out.
"How do you view picture messages on this crap?" he asks, handing me his phone. I take it and try not to grimace. I know exactly why a 54 year old man would want to know how to view photos in his phone. I scroll through his phone, pretending to try and figure it out. I open his messages and sure enough he's got a couple unsaved numbers with picture messages unopened. I take it upon myself to open the pictures, seeing as he won't even know the difference. The first one is a woman, probably in her mid to late 30's. She is top less, with her hand in her hair and her breasts exposed. She has dark black hair and tan skin. She is kind of pudgy and the picture is cropped just below her first belly roll. I keep a straight face as I scroll through the others to find the same thing. Grown, married woman, exposing themselves to a grown married man. I hand the phone back to him and show him step by step how to view them, neither of us acknowledging the content of the photos.
"your mom home?" he asks.
Does it sound like she's home? "No." He doesn't say anything else so I close the door and head back to my room. As I'm closing the door I glance back to my dad. He's staring at his phone with a smile on his face.
Ugh.
In my room, I lay on my bed and check my phone. No new messages. No surprise there. I turn on my side and close my eyes. As always when I'm alone, I feel the tightening in my chest. The knot forming in my throat. I feel my eyes start to sting. I open my eyes and the tears begin to fall silently. Just as quickly as they came, they are gone. I sit up so fast, I get dizzy. I wipe the tears from my eyes as I feel the familiar anger bubble up inside me. The memories flash through my mind like a movie and I shudder.
"Scarlet?" I freeze, for a moment not recognizing the female voice. "Scarlet come help me with the groceries."
I debate for a couple seconds about whether I should go help my mother. I decide not to because even though it was a couple of tears, she'll still know and ask questions. I plop back down on my bed and turn to face the wall. I pull my blanket up to my chin and close my eyes. I hear her open my door and a couple seconds later she closes it. A couple minutes later, I manage to fall asleep.
