The night I first met him.
(Beth is only 6 years old)
"Goodnight Beth," Mother says as she sweeps down swiftly to plant a soft kiss on my forehead. I pull the blanket over my head with a giggle as I feel her pulling the sheet down. I peek out as I watch father walk into the room and stand beside mother.
"What about me?" He asks as he places his hand on his chest. I giggle and open my arms as he swoops down, repeating mothers actions and kisses my cheek before tickling my sides. I squeal with delight as he assaults me in a way that should only be allowed.
"Harry," Mother scolds as she playfully slaps fathers hands away from my aching sides. I breath in much needed air as mother drags father out of the room, smiling as she turns on my nightlight before closing my door.
I sigh as I hug the sheets I clench in my fists, fighting away the urge to follow mother and father back to their room. I hate night times, they are only filled with darkness and scary things. I once heard a noise that sounded so scary, I peed my pants. Kidding, but I did scream because it was so scary.
A creak in the floorboards sound as I bring the sheets up and over my head. When it is windy, the floorboards creak because our house is old which makes it seem like someone is walking in my room but they aren't cause father checked for monsters last night.
My nightlight starts to flicker as the wind picks up, I whimper and curl into a ball under the sheets as the air starts to get cooler. I really want to run to mother and fathers room but it is all the way down the hall which means I would get attacked by monsters on the way, which I do not like one bit.
The nightlight flickers for a minute before stopping and brightening up the room as I thank god darkness doesn't surround me. I gasp as the light turns off all of a sudden and my hands begin to shake. I take deep breathes as it gets harder to breath under these sheets and I am forced to poke my head out.
I take deep breathes in as I scan the dark room, not being able to see anything but....eyes. White eyes with black pupils stand out from the corner as they don't blink once but only stare. Someone is in this room with me, a monster is gonna get me. It has already trapped me.
A blood curdling scream builds up inside of me out of pure fright as I watch the terrible creature remain in the corner. I scream and huddle into the corner, exactly opposite to the monster as I begin to cry. Cry because a monster is in my room, because mother and father aren't here, because it is gonna get me.
I close my eyes as the monster looks at me curiously but my door opens before he can approach me. Mother and father burst into the door and switch on the nightlight. They spot me huddled in the corner and rush over to me.
"Mama," I cry out as she opens her arms and brings me in for a warm hug. I look back at the corner, over my mothers shoulder as father begins approaching the same place the monster was.
"No Dada, No. It'll hurt you, Mama, don't let Dada go over there. It'll get you. It almost got me, don't let it get you." I begin to cry hysterically as I try to reach for father desperately. He looks cautious by my accusations and continues to the corner as mother hugs me tighter. No, father can't get hurt.
I scream as I thrash in mothers arms to try and save father. Father looks back at me and pulls out his phone before tapping away at it. A light appears out of the phone as he flashes it into the corner and I scream because of the sight.
It is empty.
