Call Me Luna
The Encounter - Chapter 1
I heard stiff leaves crack beneath the feet of another. Someone else was here, in these woods, with me. Fear coursed through my body as my eyes searched for the other creature. The darkness of the night willed me to see nothing. Another snap occurred to my right and a searched in that direction but found nothing once again. My heart was beating faster as I took larger breaths. It was so cold outside that white air poured out of my mouth in curls like a dragon breathing fire. Without warning, a large grey wolf leaped out into the open just 6 feet in front of me. I could practically feel the heat radiating off its body. The wolf’s fur was bristled and its teeth were barred. Its paws practically dug into the dirt in its pouncing position and the wolf looked like it was about to jump onto me. Although I was frightened by this angered beast, its eyes fascinated me. They were a piercing blue and seemed to stare right through my soul. It was then that I realized we can learn a lot from wolves. They never left anyone behind and were fearless, strong animals but what interested me the most was that their eyes seemed to hold truth, lust, and icy pain.
The wolf took another step closer, a blood curling growl erupted from its mouth. Where was its pack? It certainly couldn’t be alone in woods like these. If its pack was nearby, I would only have minutes left to live. My mind was searching for an escape as my eyes examined every escape route possible. Another growl came from the wolf. It was now or never. I turned and sprinted away from the grey wolf. I could hear it bark behind me but I didn’t dare turn around. It would be catching up to me soon. I cut through the trees, running in zig-zags and taking sharp cuts to get away from the wolf but when I looked back I could still see its white fangs and its bright piercing eyes that spoke death. I ran as fast as I could until I reached the end of the woods. The trees opened up and I sprinted out into the open. I had more chances of survival out here where people could find me. When I turned around, I saw nothing. The grey creature with fascinating eyes had disappeared into the woods. He had probably left after realizing he drove his prey out of hunting boundaries or maybe he was waiting to see if I had the guts to reenter the woods. Whatever his reason was, I never saw the wolf again.
I closed the book and looked back up at the children with my hazel eyes. They stared up at me in wonder. I tucked a strand of my thick brown hair behind my ear and called on a little boy who had his hand raised.
“Miss Nicole? Did this actually happen to you?” a little boy named Sebastian asked
“Yes this did actually happen to me. It occurred about 2 years ago” I replied and called on a little girl named Braelynn.
“Did you ever try to find the wolf?” she asked me.
“I have searched for him in those woods but he seemed to have disappeared. When I asked people told me they had never heard or known of a person who had seen a wolf in those woods. It was almost as if it was a dream” I looked back down at the girl.
“have you ever had that feeling?” I asked her. She nodded quickly agreeing with me. I smiled at her.
“Does anyone else have any questions about the book or about the wolf?” I looked around the second grade classroom. No one raised their hands so I simple nodded saying, “well thanks for having me guys! You were all very good!”
I stood up and grabbed the book while readjusting the bracelets on my wrist. I walked to the back of the classroom.
“Thanks for letting me read to them, mom” I told my mother who happened to be their teacher.
“Of course, darling! They always love when you read to them” my mother smiled at me. I came in here often to read to the kids and since my mom was their teacher, I could come in whenever I wanted to.
