She lay there, tossing and turning on her makeshift bed, another nightmare. She had been getting those a lot lately. She was becoming restless as the colors flashed behind her closed eyelids. The imaginary sounds of shouting and weapons smashing against each other ringing through her head. She was in the middle of a war, a war between angels and demons. How she got there was a mystery. All she knew was that she was falling. Falling fast and she couldn't stop. She watched as the faceless strangers called out to her. There was a bright blue flash as she hit the ground.
I jolted up from makes shift bed, which was just a mattress cover and a blanket, the cold sweat dripping down my forehead. I've been having the same nightmare for a week. The same faceless strangers calling my name as I fall, the same bright blue light. What's wrong with me? Why am I having these nightmares?
I stand up stretching and look around my home. I use the term "home" loosely, considering it's not a home. It's more like a half destroyed shack. One of the walls is missing. All the windows have been broken and the roof has a gaping hole in it. Moss covered a majority of the wood on the inside. Vines grew on the outside, Mother Nature slowly claiming it back to her wilderness. The whole place has a musty smell to it. But it was home none of the less. It's all I have since the world went to hell. All I have since the day I lost my mother and brother.
I don't remember much of what happened that day. All I remember was everyone in a panic. There were bursts of light and shadows everywhere. The sounds of screaming and shouting could be heard for miles. Buildings were being destroyed. Debris getting thrown everywhere. Some of it crushing people. I was running with my mother and brother when I tripped over the ruble and got trampled. Everything went black. When I woke up I was in this shack. I was 10 when that happened. I'm now 17. I've learned how to hunt and scavenge and fight.
Pulling on my combat boots, I go out into town to scavenge for more supplies. I was running low on food and needed a new pair of shoes. I grabbed my bow and quiver full of arrows, and headed out. The town looked like a bomb went off. All the buildings are ruined, ruble cluttered the streets. Broken glass and sharp meatal beams were everywhere. It was sad to see the place that was so full of life look like a ghost town. The place everyone used to hangout in, aren't there. Only the sad skeletons of what used to be coffee shops, malls, and movie theaters. The parks are cover with chucks of concrete and scrapes of metal. Bodies had decayed and all that's left were the bones.
After walking for an hour or two I come across a building that barely stood and head down the alley next to it. There was what looked like a pile of canned goods and a blanket. I took the cans of food, after noticing the body of a poor old woman decaying under the blanket knowing she wouldn't miss them. Putting the cans in my bag, I started to leave the alley.
Once I near the opening of the alley, strange creatures with bat or dragon like wings fly by followed closely by more of them but with white and silver feathery wing. I ducked out of site and watched as the two groups fight. There were flashes of bright lights and flashes of darkness. The creatures shout to each other. Telling each other to watch out for on coming attacks. A girl with silvery white wings gets hit with black flames. She is thrown into the alley I was hiding in.
She looks like she's passed out. Attached to her waist was a weapon. It looked like two scythes attached to a chain. Her beautiful white dress was torn and dirty. Her hair was a slivery blond with a single rose in it. Her once pure wings now covered in darkness and dirt. What is she? I look at her weapon again and noticed something on the blade. The letters s-e-i-t-a were engraved in the shiny meatal.
There was a sharp pain in my side. Looking down at where the pain came from I see a throwing knife in my side. Shit. Getting wound out here was never good, with medical supplies very scares. The blood leaks out of my body. I know I shouldn't take the knife out but I take it out anyway. Dropping the knife on the ground in a puddle of my own blood, the blood loss starts getting to me. I start to get dizzy and the lights and sounds of battle blending together.
As I start to lose consciousness, as I see two men fly over one looked like the girl beside me. And the other was bigger and stronger. His platinum blond hair covering his eyes. They both say something but I can't make out what it was. All too soon I lose consciousness, the world plunging into darkness.
She ducks as a faceless figure swings a scythe at her head. She fires an arrow. It misses its target and the figure swings at her again. Out of nowhere a blast of wind hits the attacker. "You must be careful you're the only one who can stop this war." The girl with blonde hair says. "What war? What are you talking about?" she says back, confusion filling her voice. Then she sees the two men from earlier. Losing the battles there in. "The war between angels and demons." The blonde girl shouts over her fight with a man with dragon looking wings. The girl easily dodges a fatal blow of the man's throwing knives. But fails to dodge the next and she falls, a wing being badly damaged. Not thinking she screams out for the girl she doesn't know.
I sit up in bed quickly, pain searing in my side. "Ah you're finally awake." A woman in her thirties said to me. "Who are you? Where am I? Why am I here?" I asked. "I'm sorry dear but I may only answer why you are here. Two people brought you here. You had been wounded in their fight with the demons." She responded. "How long have I been out?" I asked out loud. "About a week dear." She told me while giving a bowl filled with what I believed to be chicken soup.
I don't care what it is at this point, I'm so hungry. I eat what was in the bowl in less than 5 minutes. After finishing what was in the bowl I started to feel drowsy. Drifting off into the first dream less sleep I've had in a long time. I'm grateful for this kind woman tending to me. But should I trust her. It's hard to trust anyone in the world we live in now. I let my mind wander as I drift off.
I wake up some time later to someone shaking my arm lightly. I open my to a bright light and immediately shut them. I open my eyes again, slower this time, to let my eyes adjust to the bright light. "Sorry to bother you." A soft deep voice said. "I just need to ask you some questions." I look to my left and see one of the guys I saw earlier. It was the stronger of the two with the platinum blonde hair.
"Who are you?" I asked him. "I can't tell you that right now. But I need to know who you are and what you are." He said. "My name is Sadie Jackson. I'm just a regular person." I respond. "How long have you been out there?" he asked. "Seven years." I replied. I met his eyes. He looked surprised at my response. I probably would too if I saw me. I'm probably around 110 when I comes to weight and I was only 5 feet tall. I have short black hair and striking green eyes. I'm very petite and don't look as strong as I am. I am physically fit thought. He stood up abruptly and asked me if I wanted to stay here wherever here was. He said he'd come back later for an answer and left me alone with the nurse. I already knew my answer though.
I spent the rest of the day talking to the nurse. I found out she was happily married and was one month pregnant. It's amazing that even in this situation she can find the time and love to have a child. Then I realized this child will have to grow up in this hell. No child should grow up in this world. This world is cold and cruel. There's no place for innocence in a cold dark place like this. There too much pain in the world for a child. Too much disappointment.
A child deserves a happy life. Full of sunshine and love. They deserve to have fun and live care free. Instead of wondering when there next meal is or spending their days alone. They need friends. A world where everything is ok and safe. Not one where you can't trust anyone or you have to watch your back. Not this. The world now is too dangerous. Almost everyone has left or died. There's no happiness or sunshine. It's just bleak, gray, and sad. A child deserves freedom.
I got snapped out of my thoughts by the door to the make shift infirmary shutting loudly. The man with platinum blonde hair was back and this time he had the blonde girl and the boy that look like her. "Have you made your decision yet?" The man asked. "Yes, I have. I would like to stay here. I feel I'll be safer here then out there. " I replied. " Then welcome to the resistance. I am Demetri. This is Seita and her twin brother Hyde." He pointed to the two behind him. "And this is Deborah." He gestured to the nurse. "Alright Demetri, let the poor girl rest now." Deborah interjected. Demetri stood. "Okay, Debby were leaving now. Have a goodnights rest Sadie." The three of them left after bidding Deborah and I good night and filed out one by one.
