Everything is not as it seems
Everything in my world was black for a moment. When I awoke, Emily was kneeling over me. Her eyes were clouded with worry. "Are you ok?" She asked anxiously.
My mind was reeling. I had just seen my parents dead, and witnessed a horrible and gruesome scene. All my fears had come true. I looked towards the wall that my parents had been lying against. There was nothing there. Not one speck of blood. Just white wall.
The house was still empty too. Just me and Emily.
"Are you ok?" She repeated.
I jumped. I had forgotten that she had asked me a question.
"Do you want the truth?" I asked without looking at her.
She nodded. "Nothing but the truth,"
I hesitated. I didn’t want her to think differently about me. Would she still want to be my friend when she realized what a weirdo I was?
I took a deep breath. She should know. I couldn’t keep hiding this forever. I took a deep breath, and I told her about my strange visions. "I just had one," I said. "It was the worst one I've ever had in my life."
"What did you see?" She asked, her lips trembling.
"My parents…they were dead. They were over there." I sat up and pointed at the wall. "My dad was decapitated and my mom's throat was slit. On the wall was written 'I'm watching you M&M."
I paused and shuddered. "What else happened?" She pressed gently.
"I told you to call 9-11, but you were gone…" I trailed off. She had been gone in my vision. When I needed her the most, she hadn't been there.
She hugged me. "I would never leave you," She whispered.
"Thanks," I whispered back. I choked on a sob.
Then it dawned on me. How much of today had been part of the vision. Maybe the whole thing had been part of it. The weird man too.
I asked Emily about it and she shook her head. She told me what we had done today. Apparently we had gone to the mall, not the park. She showed me my striped shopping bags. We had gone to bath and body works where I had fallen in love with a new fragrance. She also said that we hadn’t seen a weird pale man in the park. And my cell phone was in my pocket.
I reached down and patted my pocket. There was something hard, smooth and rectangular nestled in it. My phone had been in my pocket the whole time.
"I was so worried," She fretted. "You started foaming at the mouth and convulsing like crazy, like you do at school. This time it lasted longer though. I thought you would never snap out of it."
I smiled reassuringly at her. "Yea, that’s how it usually is. Don’t worry about me. I'm ok now."
She didn’t return my smile. "You should get some rest,"
I shook my head. "I'll never be able to get to sleep after that," I laughed nervously.
"I don’t blame you. We can go to your room and you can lay down. I'll stay until you fall asleep."
I nodded. At least she wasn’t leaving me alone. We stomped up the stairs and walked into my room. Everything looked normal enough. Everything was just as I had left it. My makeup set was out and my PJs were still in a pile on the floor.
Emily led me to my bed and I laid down. She sat at my feet and watched me with worried eyes.
The moment my head touched the pillow, my eyes began burning and a yawn forced its way out of my throat.
"just sleep," She whispered. "I'll be here until you fall asleep."
Her voice was magical. It was so smooth and calming. I couldn't help but feel so tired and drained. My eyelids drooped. I tried to stay awake, but the darkness was coming fast. It over took me before I had time to think. Then I was alone again, swimming in the ocean of my sub consciousness.
The water was deep and comforting, but heavy. It would not let me up no matter how much I struggled. Finally I just let go of myself and allowed the current to take me away.
I awoke to a stream of sunlight that penetrated my window and washed my face in gold. It was so pretty. I could hear commotion below me. My mom was undoubtedly getting ready for work while dad was complaining about not getting the daily newspaper. Just a regular day.
I sat up in bed and shivered as the memory of the terrible vision came to mind. You see that’s the trouble with the visions I have. They are often very vivid, lifelike. They usually also provide symbols that usually mean something else, or they come true as I see them. Either way, it's nice to have a heads up when something bad is about to happen. I could just hope that this one is symbolic and not real.
I sat up in my bed and stretched out my stiff back. I then got to my feet and got out my makeup set. While I was tracing the edge of my eyes with eye liner I noticed my cell phone on my desk in the corner. It was all alone.
I quickly finished up with my eyeliner then picked up my phone. I didn't remember taking it out of my pocket before I went to sleep. I remembered just getting into bed, clothes and all.
I flipped it open. There was a little white box stating that I had a new text message. I pressed the appropriate buttons and the message came up. I froze.
Written across the screen was the words "I'm watching you M&M," It was from a number that I did not recognize. Probably a prank text I reassured myself. I did not feel any better.
I exited out of the text and dialed Emily's number. Maybe she had an idea what the message could mean. Emily was smart. If anyone could figure it out, she could.
The phone rang once then went to the voicemail. Her phone was off, how strange.
I went down the stairs. My parents must have already left because the lights were off and there was not a sound to be heard in the house. I stumbled through the darkness and felt on the wall for the light switch. I flicked it on. The room was engulfed in artificial light.
I then went into the kitchen to dig up some grub. I found a some potato salad and a half of a turkey sandwich. I sat down to eat it and dialed Emily's number again. The busy tone came up again. I closed the phone, sighing then finished up my sandwich and salad.
I walked outside down the front path towards the road then looked down the street. There was nothing interesting happening, just leaves circling towards the ground and the merry chirp of birds. Then the world went black. I remember thinking a split second before it happened Oh no, not again.
