I just finished my night shift at the fast food chain I worked in. It was freezing outside. Snow was pilling up rapidly at the door. I trudged outside with weary legs trying to make past the snow fortress and onto the snow-free alley. I shivered. My eyes were drooping. All I wanted was to go back to my comfortable home and snore away. Just then, I thought I heard a faint but distressed call for help. My drooping eyes became vigilant instantly. I scanned the vicinity with my"eagle eyes". But all seemed ordinary if not for the creaking sound caused by the rusty door. I relaxed. I dismissed the distressed call as a figment of my imagination due to my weariness. I proceeded with my journey back home.
Suddenly, as I approached the blind-spot behind the alley, which was not visible to moments ago, I saw to my horror a man trying to strangle a lady in her mid-twenties with a rope! My muscles tensed. I ducked behind the wall separating the alley and the blind-spot. The blonde haired lady was choking. She pulled the rope but to no avail. The man was grinning like a mad man. I turned as pale as a sheet and my trembling hands turned cold and clammy. I did not know what to do. I was in a dilemma. If I chose option one which was to intervene, I might not be able to stop such a muscular lunatic. Moreover, I might even end up with the same fate as that poor lady! That idea sent shivers down my spine. Option two was to seek help from the police but even the nearest police station was 500 metres away. It was too far away. I witnessed the rope grazing her neck, her eyeballs almost popping out and her saliva dripping out of her chapped lips. These were definitely not good signs. I had to do something. Fast. There was not much time left. I made my decision.
"If I'm going to do this, I'm at least going to make my entrance dramatic and hero-like!" I thought. "No you don't!" I thundered my "war cry" before attempting a mid-air kick, but, of course failed dramatically. The man, I realized, was packed with deadly bulging muscles despite his grey hair and wrinkled skin. His eyes narrowed, glared at me with such murderous intent that if looks could kill; I would be dead by then."This is the worst decision in my whole life!" I thought regretfully to myself. His powerful grip loosened on the rope and the lady slumped to the ground motionless but breathing. The old man then lunged at me with such a force that could even challenge the strongest buffalos. My eyes widened in fear. I reacted immediately and swerved to my left to avoid his strike. I attempted another move-the karate chop on his neck, but, in vain." Ouch!" I cried out loudly in pain. I hit the wall instead. He laughed insanely as if mocking me. He grabbed my arm with an iron grip, and twisted. Just when I thought I was doomed, help arrived. "Police! Hands behind your head!" A thunderous voice boomed. The backup I called for arrived, finally. The old man had no where to run. He was outnumbered by armed police. No matter how strong he was, he still stood no chance against a bullet head-on. Sensing that he was already defeated , the old man chose the smart way and was led away by the police. The lady was sent to the hospital immediately. After a check up, it was determined that her life was not in danger. I was praised for my courageous act. That night, the minute my head hit the pillow, I was transported to slumberland.
