A/N: Hi, this is my first story on here and I'm trying get my best to do well. This will probably start off slow but I'm trying to set the scene for the rest of the story in this chapter. And it's a very small change until the Zoldyk mansion and especially at Heavens Arena where you'll see more Killugon emerge. They few chapters before then will be a little slower with less Killugon then I would like but they are necessary. I don't like to start a story in weird places and I felt like giving this background was a good idea. Each chapter will roughly correspond with one episode of HunterXHunter (2001) and this chapter starts after Gon has passed out during the final exam part of the Hunter Exam. I hope you enjoy it.
-Gon's Point Of View-
Gon was running. Running up a massive winding staircase that seemed to go up forever. He was panting hard, in a desperate hurry to get to the end of the staircase. Why he was running up it he didn't really know but he knew he had to. That if he didn't he would always regret it. He ran as fast as he could and eventually could see the top. Standing at the top was a shadowy figure with their back turned to him. He ran faster trying to get to them.
The person had wild hair that pointed out in different directions but Gon still could not see their face. As he ran towards them they began to turn ever so slowly. As he got closer and they turned farther, the staircase fell apart beneath his feet. It crumbled to dust and he fell.
Gon slowly drifted towards consciousness. He was laying in a bed, unusual after having been participating in the Hunter Exam for quite a while now. As he opened his eyes, he peered into the blinding light above him. He gave his eyes a minute to readjust to being awake again and then sat up in bed. His left arm was wrapped in a cast and as he looked at it memories of what happened came flooding back to him.
Hanzo beating him to a bloody pulp. His refusal to give in. Hanzo finally breaking his arm to make him concede defeat. Him not giving up. And finally Hanzo forfeiting and knocking him out when he wouldn't accept it. He looked over to his side and saw Satotz sitting in a chair next to his bed.
Satotz saw that he was awake and closed the book he had been reading. "You broke your arm." He said, moving closer to Gon's bed "but do not worry. It should heal back stronger than it was originally."
Satotz then reached out his hand to Gon "In any case, congratulations on passing the Hunter Exam."
Seeing the coming denial in Gon's eyes Satotz grabbed Gon's hand and forced him to shake hands with him. Satotz told him that, in the same way that someone who has failed can no longer pass the exam, since he has passed he can no longer fail. He tells Gon that he is free to do with his listened as he wants but he had to accept it for now.
Gon then asked him how the Hunter Exam was going and was shocked to discover that the exam had actually already ended. He had been asleep for an entire day. Killua was going to think he was so lazy for sleeping that long. That reminded him
"Satotz, how did the exam turn out? Who ended up failing?"
He kept his fingers crossed for Hisoka but knew that wasn't going to happen. Satotz grew grim and stared at Gon for a second. Then he seemed to make a decision.
"That was... Killua"
Gon's eyes widened in shock. How had Killua failed? What had happened? Did this mean his friend was gone? He asked Satotz how Killua had failed and once more Satotz grew grim.
He took a breath and then proceeded to tell him everything that had happened since he had blacked out. How Hanzo said Gon had won him over. How Hisoka conceded to Kurapika after whispering something in his ear. How Hanzo beat Pokkle. How Hisoka destroyed Bodoro. And how finally, Killua got up to fight Gittarackur.
He told him that Gittarackur was actually Killua's older brother Illumi. And that for a large part he had just spoken to Killia during their match.-Flashback-
Illumi stood over his trembling brother as Killua stared up at him. There was so much fear in Killua that he wanted to just run but he couldn't.
Killua stared in horror as Illumi began to tell him what his biggest fear was. That he was nothing but a killer. That he could never be a Hunter because all he could feel was pleasure when someone died. That he lived in the dark and would only ever kill. That Killua could never want anything on his own.
Killua yelled that that wasn't true. There was something he wanted. More than anything. Illumi began to mock him for that. If he wanted something, why didn't he tell him what it was? What did he want? Killua was shaking so much he couldn't answer and Illumi almost smirked.
"There isn't anything that you want. Because me and dad raised you like that. You'll never want anything. Nothing but to kill. That's your life."
"NO!" Killua yelled "That's not true." Then his voice got quieter "there is something I want. Something I really want. I want... To be friends... With Gon."
Illumi alms it laughed at that. "An assassin has no need for friends. And besides, who would want to be friends with you? As bloody as your hands are? You know that can never happen."
Killua kept shaking in fear. No longer because of his brothers presence but more because of what he had said. Because he knew Illumi was right. He had killed to many people to have friends. Suddenly there was a sound from his right. Leorio walked up to the edge of the fighting area, glared at the guard that stopped him and then at Killua.
"ARE YOU AN IDIOT!?"
Killua spun towards him in surprise.
"You and Gon already are friends. Good grief. I know Gon feels that way."
Killua gasped at that. Someone wanted to be friends with him. With him. The killer from the Zoldyk family.
Illumi gazed at Killua and shook his head. "This won't do. If Gon considers you a friend... I guess there's no choice. I'll just have to kill him."
Illumi began walking towards the doors Gon had been taken through after he had passed out but was stopped by Hanzo, Kurapika, and Leorio blocking the doors. Illumi sighed, "Oh no. I can't kill them or I will get disqualified and I need this lose nice for my job."
Illumi stopped to think for a moment and then a thought seemed to strike him "Come to think of it, the same would happen if I killed Gon. Oh well, I'll just kill him after I pass the exam."
Killua gazed horrified at his monster of a brother and knew he was telling the truth. His brother walked towards him and told him that the only way to save Gon was to beat him. He walked closer and extended a hand to ouch Killua, once he touched him, it would be over. Killua knew that. He walked closer. And closer. And closer. And was finally working a few centimeters of Killua's forehead when Killua dropped his head and surrendered.
Illumi smiled happily and told Killua that it had all been a joke. He wasn't going to kill Gon. And then walked away. When the next match between Leorio and Bodoro began they had just been given the go ahead to fight when Bodoro lurched forward, Killua's hand in his back. Killua pulled back, covered in blood splatter, as Bodoro died on the floor and everyone looked on in shock. Killua was disqualified immediately and sent away.
-End Flashback-
Gon was pissed. He stormed down the hallway towards the orientation ignoring the frantic calls for more rest from Satotz behind him. He slammed the doors open and marched right to Illumi and grabbed his arm in a bone crushing grip.
He demanded that Illumi apologize to Killua at once but when Illumi ignored him he changed his request
"Take me to see Killua. Now."A/N: That's it for now. Again, my first story so all critiques are welcomed. I'm the next chapter Gon will get to the Zoldyk mansion and start to think about his friendship with Killua as he tried o get to his best friend.
