Forty minutes later, a female doctor exited through the doors. "Is Isobel Granger's next of kin here?" Dr Alanah Kennedy looked over and saw the somber looks on the group's faces.

Callen rose. "I'm her husband."

Sophie stood and grabbed hold of her dad as the doctor walked over to them. "Isobel is stable and recovering well. We've moved her into a private room on the fourth floor. You can go and see her now." She looked at all the expectant faces. "I'm sorry, but only her husband at this stage."

Marcus stood and walked over, trying hard to regain his emotions. "I'm her father. Is it alright if I see her too?"

Dr Kennedy looked at the older man and nodded her head. "But no one else for today."

But what about Papa?" Sophie added. "And me and my sisters. She's our mom."

Dr Kennedy looked to Callen for some help. "Your mom needs to rest to recover..."

"Mom's been through a lot worse. She's tough. We need to see her. Please," Sophie begged.

"Alright then. But you mustn't be loud or stay long. I have to go back to the theatre. They need my help."

As Dr Kennedy went to walk away, Callen caught her arm. "Do you know how my son, Jack and my mother-in-law, Rose Campbell, are doing, doc?" She saw the worry in his eyes.

"I'll see if I can get someone to come out to talk with you. Stay here a minute before going down to the fourth floor." Dr Kennedy tried to give Callen a reassuring smile. The boy and older woman hadn't been her patients, but she was well aware of the complications her colleagues were having with both of them. She quickly walked through the door to find someone to provide them with some details. She passed Dr. Hugh Wallace in the corridor. He looked exhausted.

"Hugh! How is the boy? His family is waiting outside to hear about him and Rose Campbell," Alanah inquired.

"We've managed to get him stable. It was a close call though. I'm on my way now to speak with them. Ben's still working on Mrs Campbell. I'm not sure what's going on there. We've been flat tack trying hard to save the boy's life." Alanah rested her hand on his arm for support. It was a tough job, saving lives, especially that of the young.

Callen turned as he saw the double doors open and a man in his thirties walked out. He looked like he hadn't slept in two days. "Family of Jack Granger?" The doctor asked.

Callen nodded. "I'm his father. How is he?" Dr Wallace pulled Callen to the side to speak with him on his own.

"Your son has suffered a bullet wound through the abdomen. There was a lot of internal bleeding. We've managed to get him stable and stitch him up. He's receiving a blood transfusion as he's lost a lot of blood. It's going to be a slow recovery for your son. We had to remove his spleen as it was badly damaged from the bullet impact. It's going to be a few more hours before you'll be able to see him."

Tears welled up in Callen's eyes as he took in the severity of his son's injuries. In six hours his world had turned upside down. "Thank you, doc," he managed to say. Sophie ran over to her dad fearing he worst. "It's okay, Soph. Jack's in recovery," he assured her.

Sophie hugged him tight as her emotions got the better of her again. "Can we see him?" As she looked up at Dr Wallace who could see the pleading in her eyes.

"Not for a few hours. He's a tough kid." Hugh was amazed the boy had survived. He had dealt with kids and even adults with similar bullet wounds or injuries from car accidents, with many not surviving the trauma.

"He's tough like his parents." Alexander arrived by Callen and Sophie's side. "Do you know how Rose Campbell is Dr Wallace?" Alexander had read the doctor's name on the tag before addressing him.
