It was chaos.

I didn't know where to look, where to hit, what to listen for. Nothing was organised; it was a complete mess. And I could see people getting hurt.

Hayden! I called out, searching for him in the crowd.

Dawn? Dawn, are you alright?! Are you safe? Where are you?! His voice was frantic.

I'm fine, just tell me where you are and I'll come to you.

I'm by the-

Hayden?

...Hayden?

No response.

Now stricken with fear, I barrelled through the Shifters, uncaring of the wolves or bears that I hit, unresponsive to swipes at my flank.

Where was my mate? I desperately wracked my brains for a place that he might go to overpower an opponent, I focussed on the phantom scent of him as my erratic eyes searched for him.

Finally, I caught his scent.

Hayden! I tried again. Nothing. My paws barely scathing the ground, I bolted through the trees as I reentered the forest, my nose working to locate him. It was surprisingly quiet in the underbrush; it seemed as though everyone had congregated in the centre of the village.

As I pushed through the woods, the scent grew stronger, becoming like a thick stream of hot pink that flowed through the air and led me in the right direction.

Just as quickly as I had started to run, I skidded to a halt.

There was Hayden.

And with a terrifying howl ripping from my vocal cords, the whole world came to a stop.

Hayden was dead.
