On a bright spring morning with the dew weighing down the slight mist that had gathered at the train station, Kim Namjoo tapped her foot restlessly on the thick platform. Waiting for the sky train was taking longer than usual or maybe it just had to do with the fact that she'd had a sleepless night with the damn neighbor's dog who had thrown at her a package of paranoia for having barked the whole night.
Running a hand through her damp hair from that morning's short shower she was sure that her hair had already bunched up into its damn natural curls that never seemed to straighten out no matter how many hair products she wasted. Groaning slightly she slowly blinked and glanced toward her right when the ground grumbled.
Namjoo of 27 was working in Bangkok, Thailand for a neat fashion company. She'd been in the hot country fuming with heat whatever season seemed to pass by. The always busy roads were always something to look at, yet full of danger. Never did a car seem to stop for pedestrians. It seemed a lot less organized than the dangerous night roads in South Korea.
Grabbing at the cord of her bag she clamped the tip of her other hand into the pocket of her shorts. Deciding to take a glance around she saw the usual students, business goers, and tourists gathering. She hadn't realized how quickly the platform had filled up. It was a good thing she'd arrived early.
Already her forehead was beginning to dampen with the morning heat which never seemed to dwindle. Heaving a quiet sigh she watched as the train rolled by in a fast blur. Foreign conversations around her started to mix the air, a melting pot, she'd call it.
The doors opened with a loud gasp and all of a sudden Namjoo found herself fighting amongst the crowd to get inside the train. Women, men, students pushed her from all sides squeezing her in what seemed like the core of a fight. When the crowd lessened Namjoo believed she'd finally be able to cut through, but suddenly a pair of footsteps seemed so relevant in her ears. Scrunching up her shoulders from the impact as well as trying to decrease her size to make it easier to get through, she pushed head on only to have her shoulder heavily tossed to the side.
"Ah!" she shouted and turned to glare at whoever it was.
Her eyes landed at the broad shoulders of a man finely dressed in a plain blue t-shirt, a suit jacket neatly buttoned over it. Very slowly she rose her eyes up and met a pair of eyes she had long forgotten about. They stared at each other seemingly lost and the thought that she would be late for work left her mind like the mist that had vanished into thin air. A bright sun was shining in through the terrace and even that seemed irrelevant. The man in front of her, his eyes dug so deeply into hers that Namjoo lost the ability to breathe, think, and live.
No, he was not a forlorn lover. There had been nothing special between them. He hadn't been a dongsaeng or an oppa. They weren't classmates either. Namjoo wouldn't even consider him an acquaintance, but perhaps something like a fish she'd seen dying in the mud. He on the other hand considered her something out of the world. An attraction he hadn't been able to oppose. There was no possibility that she would have droned over him like he her.
In the strange city of Bangkok, Namjoo would have never imagined meeting him outside.
Yes, that was it. She suddenly remembered his name.
Kris Wu, fiancé of her older sister, Kim Hyunjoo. Unlike her reckless sister who was 4 years her senior, Namjoo was successful, smart, able, a woman filled with determination and dreams. When news that Hyunjoo had gotten engaged traveled around Namjoo was in Tokyo launching the newest brand for their fashion company. In particular, Namjoo had never met this fiancé of her sister's.
Until that day when her sister and her fiancé embroiled themselves into a heated argument. Foolishly, Hyunjoo flew to Tokyo and out of the blue insisted that she'd stay with her for a few nights. On that fateful night, Hyunjoo had gone out and never returned. In place of her, Kris had stopped by.
