"People are staring! Just let me go and come in side"

I look up and notice almost every curtain of every house in the street is drawn with a face looking out at us.
Damn it I have no choice but to let her go.

I grasp her wrist tightly and stalk over to the house, yanking her with me. I shove on the door but it doesn't open.
Ugh typical warlock magic.

Old woman Josie smirks as she grasps the handle to her supposedly house and opens the door without effort.

We enter the house and she closes the door behind me.
The house looks surprisingly normal, I don't know what I was expecting to see.

"Take a seat shadow hunter" she says pointing towards an old leather couch.

"I'll stand thanks" I say in a cold tone.

She rolls her eyes and flops herself down heavily into a chair situated in the corner of the room.

"You're so young shadow hunter, what brings you here? And with out parents I see!"

I cringe at her words but then quickly compose my self, masking my face with a neutral expression.

"I am looking for the New York institute" I say in a demanding tone.

"Ahh yes, New York institute, typical."

"Look can you just tell me where it is?" I say in frustration.

"I don't have to tell you anything shadow hunter, I am not entitled to do as you say. I might tell you simply out of the goodness of my heart but I don't think I will now!"

She crosses her arms over her chest a stubborn expression plastered on her face, I sigh in defeat.

"Alright fine, can you please tell me how to get to the institute?"

She seems to consider this for a moment then her frown abruptly changes into a grin. "Alright, I'll tell you but you have to tell me something first."

"What?"

"I see pain in your eyes, fresh raw pain I might add. Tell me shadow hunter, what's wrong?"

I quickly plaster a confused expression on my face. "Pain? What do you mean pain?"

She fixes me with a dark look "Don't play stupid with me"

"Why do you want to know?"

"Curiosity, life gets boring when you've lived as long as me, tell me"

I sigh defeatedly as I reach slowly to my belt and retrieve my mothers crumpled picture, holding it up to her. She takes it from me holding it close to her face as she studies it.

"That's Robert Lightwood he runs the institute, why do you have a photo of him?"

I begin my explanation carefully, describing my mothers death and how I never knew my father.

"So you think Robert Lightwood is your father?" She asks blandly.

I shrug "I don't know what to think"

She sighs and leaves the room telling me to wait a minute.
She returns with a map and circles a point on it with a bold red marker.

"This will show the way to the institute, follow it carefully"

I reach out and take it, leaving without another word or glance behind me.
